Hey!  I am a newbie as well and had a positive lyme titer.  I am looking for a specialist in lyme disease in Charlotte/Winston Salem area of NC.  All this is so confusing.  I have been sick for almost a year and, although I know compared to a lot of folks this is a very short amount of time, I am just ready for some answers and hoping to feel better soon.  I hope someone has the answers.

Thanks,

trday

It is very important to see a knowledgeable doctor.  Many doctors do not understand Lyme and treat with outdated protocols.  Besides Lyme, ticks can also transmit several co-infections including Babesiosis, two types of Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasma.  Many people who have Lyme are co-infected.  It may affect treatment choice and progress.  It is important to be tested for these by a Lyme reputable lab such as IgeneX in Palo Alto, CA.

You can email me at ko_@bellsouth.net for a doctor recommendation. There is a Lyme doctor close to your area.

It is also important to learn as much as possible.  I recommend reading Dr. Joseph Burrascano's 2008 Diagnostic Hints and Treatment Guidelines For Lyme and Other Tick Borne Illnesses at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf  He is one of the top Lyme doctors in the country, and many Lyme doctors follow his protocols. I also recommend the books "The Lyme Disease Solution" by Kenneth B. Singleton M.D. and "Everything You Need To Know about Lyme Disease Second Edition" by Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner.

Ticker:

Thanks so much for all the info.  This forum has been so helpful.  I also appreciate the MD names and #s.  The only problem is some of these docs can see me until August.  I just don't know what to do?

Hi trd.  Ask to be notified of any cancellations.  This can help you get in sooner.

Since you have a positive test, you should be able to get treated.  Unfortunately, many doctors undertreat Lyme.  For instance, Doxy is often prescribe first.  The dose needed for Lyme is 300-600 mg daily, with 400 mg daily often prescribed; however, many doctors will prescribe only 200 mg daily and for too short of a time.  Maybe you can find a doctor who will prescribe the right dose for a longer period of time until you can see a Lyme doctor.  Try calling the support groups to see if they may know someone.

trd, In addition to asking to be notified about cancellations, make the appointment for August and then call every few days or at least once a week to see if any cancellations came in. I lucked out and the wait for my first appointment was reduced from four months to a few weeks. Good luck!

Good Evening,

I made an appointment with a well known LLMD in the Charlotte area. The appointment was made the beginning of April and was scheduled for July 8th. Fortunately, there was a cancellation and I have already had my appointment. The key was to answer my phone when they called with a cancellation. I know this because a friend of mine is also waiting to see the same doctor and received the phone call, but did not answer.

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. My appointment was VERY encouraging!
Diagnosed with Lyme Disease (Oct '08) and Babesia in (Jan '09).
Oct '08: Oral Doxy
Nov '08: Oral Doxy & Ceftin
Dec '08: IV Rocephin
Jan '09: IV Azithromycin
Feb '09: IV Azithromycin & Mepron

I did get the one from April 30, but no reply from the May 1 I sent to you with all my labs, etc.  Did you receive it from me?
