I'm going to be starting treatment soon and will be taking 1 tsp of Mepron 2 x's a day and 250mg of biaxin to start, then work my way up to 500mg. I want to know everything about Artemesinin. What is it taken specifically for? How much to take because I will be taking supplements too. How often? And where I can get it?

Any other information is greatly appreciated. I want to make sure I do this right!

Thanks!

Hi CajunGrl.  Artemisinin is an anti-malarial herb used to treat Babesiosis.  Allergy Research (which is also Nutricology) is one brand that many Lyme doctors recommend.  Ask your doctor about dosage.  I take three 100 mg capsules daily.   I believe Fern's Nutrition http://www.fernsvitamins.com/Digestive/artemisinin.html  has the best price.

Will you only be taking 500 mg daily of Biaxin?  I believe the recommended dose is 1000 mg daily.  Some doctors are now prescribing two teaspoons of Mepron twcie daily.  If the smaller dose does not work for you, you make want to talk to your doctor about a higher dose.  Some people with Babesiosis herx on day three and approximately every three weeks.

Good luck with your new protocol!

Ticker,

I really appreciate all if the info you supply. I have a question. Can I take Artemesinin with Mepron and Biaxin? And, when should I start taking it?

Yes, they can be taken together.  Make sure your doctor knows you are taking it though.  You should ask him when to start it.  He may want you to start it first or after you have started the meds.

Thanks Ticker. I will call the office tomorrow. I'm hoping he knows what it is. What should I do if he doesn't know?

Hi CajunGrl.  Are you seeing a Lyme knowledgeable doctor?

Dr. Burrascano discusses antibiotic doses starting on page 18 of his guidelines and he discusses Babesiosis treatment starting on page 23.  He mentions adding Artemesia.

Thanks from me also for all this info, ticker.  I don't even know if I have babs, going to study it more.  I'm also going to look at Artemesinin. Am I to assume that one should not try starting it if they have not started any abx or if they do not know if they have babs?  The fact that you called it an anti-malaria and that it could cause a herx sure sounded good.

I got drawn into a little study on syphillis because of the similarities of the bacterias. Before penicillin a Dr won a Nobel for injecting syphillis patients w/ malaria, causing a high fever, sometimes curing the syphillis.  Maybe you already know that story, but I'd never heard of it.

I dont' think I'd like to inject myself w/ malaria, but if Artemesinin could possibly be beneficial, I would try it.  Or should I wait til I see a Dr?  Looks like time to go back and read Dr B again.....
Lyme in NC in 1971? Suspect TBI: Fully engorged tick followed by high fever and tonsillitis. Follwed by , lumps on neck,  chronic tonsillits w/ constant low grade to recurring high (104) fevers, severe unexplained neck stiffness and acute neck pain.   Followed by tonsillectomy, urinary tract infections, miscarriage, appendicitis while pregant, chronic severe back pain. Followed by depression, mild anxiety, mitral valve prolapse, and hypglycemia.  What was this??

Bit again couple of times, lyme suspect bite Mother's Day 2007. Bite, symptoms, lyme specific antibodies on the most lyme specific band of all = 39 IgG.  Still awaiting appt w/ LLMD.

Ticker,

Yes, I am seeing an LLMD. I'm not sure he knows about anything other than antibiotics for Lyme and Mepron for co-infections. He did tell me to take Vitamin C and B-12. I took itupon myself to take the other supplements that I am taking. And most of them are on Dr. B's list, which I am proud of.

I am starting on a low dose of Biaxin because I asked my doctor to do that for me. I had a really bad herx that lasted over a month on only 1500mg of amoxicillian so I wanted to start slow and work my way up. I'm very sensitive to medications.

Lyme,

If I were you, I'd wait and talk to my doctor. I also think the best treatment is combining antibiotics with anti-malaria meds.
