I work at an animal shelter and have a lot of contact with fleas, ticks, mosquitos and cats. I have been working here for about 6 months and have worked with animals before this at vet clinics and of course I have several pets of my own.

For the last month I have had HORRIBLE muscle/joint pain. I wake up all night long because I can't get comfortable. The soles of my feet are very sore and tender and I almost can not walk in the mornings (I am always VERY sore in the morning.)

I feel terrible pretty much all the time but it's very severe in the morning. To the point where I sometimes cry and just lay in a hot bath for hours (it's the only relief I've found.)

I am 26 years old and have always been in pretty decent shape. I can not remember ever hurting like this. It is mostly in my leg muscles and leg joints but also in my back and shoulders.

I have had some muscle twitches in my face lately as well.

Someone I know mentioned Bartonella infection and I am trying to learn more about it. I have not had a rash that I'm aware of. And no fever or chills.

What kind of doctor do you see to be diagnosed with this? Does it sound like maybe I could have this? I don't want to seem like a hyprocondriac but I am REALLY not feeling well.

If not Bartonella or Lyme what could be wrong with me? My mom has Fibromyalgia but she says what I'm describing doesn't sound like that.

I am feeling AWFUL and have no idea what to tell a doctor or what kind of doctor to see.

Hi straysavior, welcome to the board!

I am sorry you are feeling so bad.  It sounds like you are definitely at risk of getting tick bites.  Below is a Lyme symptom list.  You can have any combination of symptoms.

Unexplained fevers, sweats, chills, or flushing
Unexplained weight change--loss or gain
Fatigue, tiredness, poor stamina
Unexplained hair loss
Swollen glands
Sore throat
Testicular pain/pelvic pain
Unexplained menstrual irregularity
Unexplained milk production: breast pain
Irritable bladder or bladder dysfunction
Sexual dysfunction or loss of libido
Upset stomach
Change in bowel function-constipation, diarrhea
Chest pain or rib soreness
Shortness of breath, cough
Heart palpitations, pulse skips, heart block
Any history of a heart murmur or valve prolapse?
Joint pain or swelling
Stiffness of the joints, neck, or back
Muscle pain or cramps
Twitching of the face or other muscles
Headache
Neck creeks and cracks, neck stiffness, neck pain
Tingling, numbness, burning or stabbing sensations, shooting pains
Facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy)
Eyes/Vision: double, blurry, increased floaters, light sensitivity
Ears/Hearing: buzzing, ringing, ear pain, sound sensitivity
lncreased motion sickness, vertigo, poor balance
Lightheadedness, wooziness
Tremor
Confusion, difficulty in thinking
Difficulty with concentration, reading
Forgetfulness, poor short term memory
Disorientation: getting lost, going to wrong places
Difficulty with speech or writing

Mood swings, irritability, depression
Disturbed sleep-too much, too little, early awakening
Exaggerated symptoms or worse hangover from alcohol

When tick-borne diseases are a possibility, it is very important to see a knowledgeable doctor.  Many doctors do not understand them and treat with outdated protocols.  Besides Lyme disease and Bartonella, ticks can also transmit other infections including Babesiosis, two types of Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), and Mycoplasma.  Many people who have Lyme are co-infected.  It may affect treatment choice and progress.  It is important to be tested for these by a Lyme reputable lab such as IgeneX in Palo Alto, CA.

If you need a doctor recommendation, you can email me at ko_@bellsouth.net  Some people who have Lyme were first diagnosed with other diseases including CFS, Fibromyalgia, MS, and ALS.  You may want to show the symptom list to your mom.

It is also important to learn as much as possible.  I recommend reading Dr. Joseph Burrascano's 2008 Diagnostic Hints and Treatment Guidelines For Lyme and Other Tick Borne Illnesses at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf  He is one of the top Lyme doctors in the country, and many Lyme doctors follow his protocols. I also recommend the books "The Lyme Disease Solution" by Kenneth B. Singleton MD and "Everything You Need To Know about Lyme Disease Second Edition" by Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner.

I hope you can get answers soon.

Did your symptoms only start after working at the shelter? Is it possible that you are allergic to something? I had dogs for my entire life and when I got sick and got tested for allergies, I was VERY allergic to dogs. Never knew. It just is a thought where you are around all the animals and symptoms started to show up. LD is possible also of course. D
