I'm sorry you are dealing with other illnesses on top of this.

I believe you need to take the Doxy for at least 4 weeks. Here's a response I received last week from Razzle who is a very knowledgeable member on this forum in respsone to a question about a friend of mine who had been bit:

"Doxycycline is considered the best abx; probably should take it for at least 4 weeks to be safe. The dose needs to be high enough, too...most rx 200mg/day but I think it is supposed to be 400-600mg/day to be more effective..."

You also might want to consider seeing a llmd to make sure you were not already infected before this bite. You can get a referral to a llmd in your area from www.stephanie@turnthecorner.com.

I'm sure others who know much more about this than I do will respond to your post by tomorrow.

Good luck.

My PCP put me on 100 mg Doxy bid and, it wasn't enough for me. The vet put my dog on twice that for 21 days. He weighs 84 lbs. and I am 136 lbs.

The good thing for you is that you have the rash and are getting immediate treatment. If you can ask for higher dosage, it's better to be safe than to find out that it didn't work. That's just my opinion. Good Luck!

You can also look into a herbal protocol like Buhner's since you are early in the infection. His book "Healing Lyme" has a section about new infections.
KO
2001 symptoms started:
Tingling in fingers and toes both sides, not tested at that time for LD
2007 Summer tested pos. WB, diagnosed with LD, tested neg for co-infections thru Igenex
Abx - Doxy 100mg 2x/day for 3 weeks (before diagnosis)
Amoxicillin 1gm 2x/day for 1 month
Amoxicillin 1gm 3x/day with Probenecid 500mg 2x/day  5 months
Currently on Dr. Zhang's protocol stopped Zhang's after 6 months symptoms returned.  Started Buhner's protocol May 2009

Hi mithin, Read and make a copy of the Dr Burrascano guidelines for your doc. They can be found at the website below:

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/treatment_guidelines.html

This is a page on the ILADS website that shows different topics to read. Scroll down to the "Diagnostic Hints......" by Dr. Joseph Burrascano and click on the "read more". It will bring up his most recent document. On page 14, it states that 300-600 mg daily of doxy is best to aggressively start with. I have heard you should treat for 2 months when the infection is new. On the top of page 17, it states 4-6 weeks, but I know I have heard two months is "safer", with fewer relapses.

There is a lot of info at the ILADS website. You will find it helpful.
If you are able to treat this right away, you have a good chance of beating this. Be sure to take plenty of probiotics while you are on antibiotics, but you probably already know this.

Best wishes, bablymers mom
