I can not get my doctor to test for babesia because he says it doesn't exist in kansas.  Has anyone heard of it being diagnosed in Kansas?  I have been sick for 4 months and he has not been able to identify anything-he is currently treating for lyme even though the test was neg.

Hi biologygirl22, welcome to the board!

What symptoms are you having?  While it is possible to have Babesiosis alone, many people who have it also have Lyme disease (both are transmitted by ticks).  Below is a Lyme symptom list.  You can have any combination of symptoms.

Unexplained fevers, sweats, chills, or flushing
Unexplained weight change--loss or gain
Fatigue, tiredness, poor stamina
Unexplained hair loss
Swollen glands
Sore throat
Testicular pain/pelvic pain
Unexplained menstrual irregularity
Unexplained milk production: breast pain
Irritable bladder or bladder dysfunction
Sexual dysfunction or loss of libido
Upset stomach
Change in bowel function-constipation, diarrhea
Chest pain or rib soreness
Shortness of breath, cough
Heart palpitations, pulse skips, heart block
Any history of a heart murmur or valve prolapse?
Joint pain or swelling
Stiffness of the joints, neck, or back
Muscle pain or cramps
Twitching of the face or other muscles
Headache
Neck creeks and cracks, neck stiffness, neck pain
Tingling, numbness, burning or stabbing sensations, shooting pains
Facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy)
Eyes/Vision: double, blurry, increased floaters, light sensitivity
Ears/Hearing: buzzing, ringing, ear pain, sound sensitivity
lncreased motion sickness, vertigo, poor balance
Lightheadedness, wooziness
Tremor
Confusion, difficulty in thinking
Difficulty with concentration, reading
Forgetfulness, poor short term memory
Disorientation: getting lost, going to wrong places
Difficulty with speech or writing

Mood swings, irritability, depression
Disturbed sleep-too much, too little, early awakening
Exaggerated symptoms or worse hangover from alcohol

When tick-borne diseases are a possibility, it is very important to see a knowledgeable doctor.  Many doctors do not understand them and treat with outdated protocols.  No test is completley reliable, and results can vary by lab.  Besides Babesiosis and Lyme, ticks can also transmit other infections including two types of Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasma.  Many people have more than one infection.  It may affect treatment choice and progress.  It is important to be tested for these by a Lyme reputable lab such as IgeneX in Palo Alto, CA.

If you need a doctor recommendation, you can email me at ko_@bellsouth.net

It is also important to learn as much as possible.   I recommend reading Dr. Joseph Burrascano's 2008 Diagnostic Hints and Treatment Guidelines For Lyme and Other Tick Borne lllnesses  at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf  He is one of the top Lyme doctors in the country, and many Lyme doctors follow his protocols.   He discusses antibiotics and doses starting on page 18.   I also recommend the books "Everything You Need To Know about Lyme Disease Second Edition" by Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner and "The Lyme Disease Solution" by Kenneth B. Singleton M.D.

I hope you can get answers soon.

Hello Biology Girl,

I live in good ole Johnson County, Kansas. Home of no lyme, no babesia, and no crime. ahem.... my car was stolen last week and my Quest test shows babesia. I do not remember my number (I can look later if it will help anyone), but the interpretation said numbers in that range possibly indicate infection acute enough to show on a blood smear.

Just so you'll know -- almost none of the coinfections will show up on a Quest test. Dr and I knew that from the start. I think I may have been lucky (???) to have caught the babs on this test.

My LLMD has written the script for lab smears (on all the co-infections) from Fry labs, but I do not have the money to get them done.

Meantime, rest assured, there is babesia in KS. Your Dr only needs to think a moment on it. What reason would there be for babs being everywhere else but KS??

Yes Lyme and co-infections exist in KS.
My positive test proves it.

So funny! (NOT!) That in a small town in which I live
I know of 8 people whom have Lyme and co-infections
and the Dr. gave me the test and came back positive
along with others.

Sad to say this doctor was run out of town.
Later reported in local newpaper, Hospital saying
there are only 2 confirmed cases of Lyme in KS.

The Dr. told me himself before he had left that the local
Hospital from which he worked out of, same one reproting
only 2 cases of Lyme, had told him in a meeting that their
hospital was losing money due to the testing for lyme in
their town.

Some Dr's have to say what they say to keep their jobs.

Find a Dr. thats worth fighting right along with you.

Good Luck ! !
