I have just read that actress Parker Posey had to pull out of her Broadway show, due to Lyme Disease.  I hate to see someone else infected.  However, when this starts happening to the famous, there will be more media coverage for the disease.

My sentiments exactly. It just turns my stomach when people get Lyme... and reading all the "newbie" stories on this site... all I feel is dread and usually can't respond because my experience has been (and continues to be) so painful and drawn out (9+ years). But, if/when famous people get the LD diagnosis I just pray that their stories will break new ground for the rest of us. It seems so selfish to think this way. I hate Lyme disease.

The downside to these articles is that they usually spread the same misinformation about Lyme, like how easy it is to cure or how everyone has a bulls-eye rash. It can be frustrating. What really might make a difference is if someone famous were to get Lyme with a negative test and with co-infections. Of course, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

I just posted about this earlier...I guess my subject line was not as interesting!

Sad isn't it...maybe it will get some publicity.

Oh, and the website containing the info about Parker didn't really minimize it which I was happy to see...it said Lyme can be cured if treated early but if not can become chronic with lifelong problems.

I think lyme is a conspiracy theory I think they know it's bad but, they don't want to admit it and scare people. They are always down playing it saying it can be treated with a 21 day treatment of doxy. Are you freaking kidding me this things is terrible. I went to a new ID doctor a week ago and she had 3 really sick people in her office. This woman a little older than me was using a walker had an iv in her arm and couldn't even fill out the paperwork or husband had to do it. She said she had lyme. Why must the media down play this..this is a crippling disease when left untreated.

My husband read that Bush had it too.  I just got it myself not quite 2 months ago.

The frustrating part is that it can be largely preventable if people just KNOW about it. Egad I was recently walking in a local park with my daughter,  her friends mom and her two girls.  We all had shorts and tank tops,  pushing through brush and trees and tall grass that had grown over the walking paths.

But the disease is so rare (and I say that sarcastically) that no one would ever expect to get it.

But let's face it,  if you screwed up as badly as the CDC in underestimating the seriousness of this illness and how many people could become infected,  wouldn't you just overexaggerate the danger of another less serious disease to draw attention away from something scary like Lyme?

Ok I will get off my soapbox.  Yes I hope that news of someone famous getting this illness will draw attention to it and increase awareness.

Though,  if you were famous,  or even not famous,  and you wanted work............knowing that Lyme can prevent you from doing so many things,  and can come back for no apparent reason,  would you want a potential employer (or movie studio,  record company etc) to know you had it?

Maybe there are a lot of famous people who are hiding it like Bush did.  Just a thought.

Does anyone know anything about the status of Bush's Lyme? did he have it and get treatment early? Or was/is he one of the unfortunates to continue on w/ chronic lyme.

Gosh, do you realize that some of those stupid, inappropriate words and sentences that came out of his mouth may have been because of Lyme??

They caught Bush's Lyme early because he had the telltale rash. I never had the rash, so I wasn't diagnosed with it until a year after I was presumably exposed. Even with precautions, you can't prevent people from getting it. I live in a high deer traffic area. I live in crowded suburbs, but the deer literally walk right behind my house. I've found deer ticks on me just from walking to the mail box. How am I supposed to prevent that?

Wow IH8ticks I can see why you hate them.  Once again (being a newbie) I was thinking about how you read that wearing light clothes,  tucking in pants and shirts etc. can help prevent it--but I didn't consider areas completely infested with ticks.  That must be horrible for you.
