Any one have any info on how common it is for mosquitos to carry Lyme? My son came home from camping with his dad and had about 30 bites. A week or so later he has been real tired( wanting to nap) and complaining of stomach pain, and on and off feeling sick

I just recently learned from my ID doctor that Lyme is carried by Mosquito's and fleas as well as ticks. She said two large drug companies are trying to make a vaccine to prevent lyme. I hope they have a breakthrough.

Yes that would be great. I thought mosquitos carried lyme but dont know how often people are infected by them. I have checked my sons bites every day and he has not gotten a rash yet.

not again, I cannot swear to know the answer about mosquitoes carrying and infecting w/ Lyme. And in your son's case, it sounds like you cannot know that ticks can be eliminated from the cause/causess of his illness. Regardless, the fact that he began to get ill after all these bites, I believe that he needs to see a Dr, even if only a PCP for starters.

We had another Lyme test done today. It was the westeren blot, We have tried this 2 other times but they just did the elisa. so i will see what happenes.

The lyme test will be negative if done too soon after being infected.

I think there had been some cases, I am going to call and talk to his doctor.
Razzle Iam having him tested because of other reasons we have had him tested monts ago but it was neg. These symptoms just started this week

I would wait and about a month after the bites get him tested with Igenex and get tested for all coinfections and West Nile. Mosquitos do carry lyme darn bugs!

konawind, The reason I am having him tested now is I think he was infected before., and my Doctor seemed to think that I could of passed it to him before he was born.

I think we need to be careful about differentiating between the disesase name and the infection itself in cases like this. Mosquitos don't have Lyme-- that's a disease that afflicts humans--but they could be carriers of borrelia or babesia, or both.

In this particular case I think we can get into trouble in the discussion because it's possible a borrelia test would always come back negative b/c someone could be infected with babesia from a mosquito bite, but not borrelia. A person could become quite ill from a mosquito bite, but not have Lyme Disease, but Babesiosis only. Alternatively, a person could get infected with borrelia, be diagnosed with Lyme Disease, but also have undiagnosed Babesiosis, from which a lot of their symptoms are actually arising.  Remember Lyme Disease as defined by our medical community is the result of a borrelia infection, but in reality A LOT of the symptoms we experience are not coming from the borrelia at all, but from our other infections.

I think it'd be prudent in case of concerns over mosquito bites to not only get a Lyme Disease test (borrelia), but also a Babesiosis test.

Im a 30 year old women and have been sick for 7 months. Two weeks prior to becoming sick I went on a camping trip to Hillsdale Ill. Doctors couldn't find out what was wrong and 2 months into my illness I had a Babesia test done. my test results were IgM 1:40 when a normal range is IgM 1:10 my doctor told me I hade babesia. In a attempted to find more help for my illness I seen another doctor that told me that those results weren't conving enough for him to believe I even had the babesia. Dose anyone out there know what all this could mean Do I have it or not?

I do remember a night of sitting outdoors on the phone right before I got sick. I came inside and was covered in bites and became sick shortly after that. I never did see a tick or bite either.

Mosquitoes carry disease, encephalitis etc. I have often wondered if they are the carriers of this lyme like illness which has become epidemic.

thanks garden peace and barngurl. I have never found a tick bite on me but I was covered in mosquito bites on my legs I have also had a rash in the back of my head for past 7 months I have been sick. I have seen around 15 doctors with all of them telling me something different. the most recent symptom Ive had is a rash all over my back, been to an allergic doctor and im not allergic to anything he has tested for. Im so confused

I would treat it like a tick borne illness with antibiotics. I had all the classic neuro lyme symptoms and have been on several abx over the past few months.
Amoxicillin and cefdinir (Omnicef) have been the most effective for me. The newest is Plaquenil which is an anti Malaria medication also used for arthritis etc but I have not really started it yet. Hope this helps you. :)

A friend I have had gone camping with her grand daughter, and the little girl got a bunch of mosquito bites on her face. She took a picture just because. Two days later bulls eyes developed around every bite(there were 6). The Dr's said Lyme based off the rash. She took another picture of the bulls eyes , blew both up and has them in her office. They perfectly overlay each other. She has battled this disease for 27 yrs trying to get her son treatment, and now is an advocate for LD awareness. Scared me immensely! I can try to avoid ticks, but Mosquitos...Ahhh!

thanks for all your replies. I have been battling this illness for months and I feel like there is no end in site. I feel like I have the flu everyday. I cry and ask why nearly everyday. This has changed my whole life. I did take a month of high antibiotics back in august when I received the test results for babesia but the doctor told me I couldn't stay on antibiotics for a long period of time. I just keep having the symptoms and even new symptoms come up every few months. Im in desperate need of a doctor that will understand what Im goin through and help me. Does anyone know in Lyme doctors in Kentucky.

Need info, if you start a new post, need llmd in _____ , someone can probably help you. I will be on abx per my llmd for at least 12 months, I'm 4 months in, and improving...slowly, but I've had this for 20+ years.

Welcome to our community!! I'm so very sorry for all that you've been through and that you are feeling so poorly!

You wouldn't be able to describe what any of your rashes look like could you? It might be helpful.

If you haven't already, it would be helpful for you to start with reading through the thread at the top of the forum titled,"New to Lyme?...Start here!!", as it is packed full of important information, symptom lists (as it sounds like you could have Lyme as well), helpful links and pdf's, how to detox when one has these infections, and a list of questions that you can ask any doctor that you are seeking treatment from.

Most doctors that haven't had special training don't have a clue as to how to properly treat these infections. One month of abx isn't enough. And as far as that doc telling you that long term abx are so very harmful, Dermatologist regularly prescribe high dose abx for those with acne - and acne doesn't kill or disable people. There are things you need to do in order to use high dose, long term abx, but we can help you learn!

We get a lot of mosquitoes, but we have bats and swallows around that keep the numbers lower. There's often a bat under our patio umbrella when it's down or under a rolled up outdoor window blind, so I've had some close views. It startled me when I saw the first one after opening up the umbrella. He was surprised too! I'm glad they're around though since they can consume a lot of them in an evening. the swallows get them in the morning and evenings before it's dark.

We have bats that come live in our barn each Spring through til it gets too cold!! I love them!! They are really cool little creatures! And, as you said, Garden Peace, they eat a lot of bugs!!! :-)

As hard as it is for me to accept, common sense makes me believe that mosquitoes can carry Lyme & Co. Mosquitoes feast on the same animals/same blood as ticks, after all.
Many have touched on how important bats and birds are to controlling these populations of both ticks and mosquitoes. I'm so glad people are bringing that up! Keeping our cats from killing birds, and also advocating for the stopping of spraying of harmful chemicals that kill important amphibians and reptiles, bats, and birds can help these creatures come back in populations, and therefore cut down the bug populations.
Also, a note that many of us here on the forums know...but new people may not know. DON'T wait for the bullseye rash. It only happens about 40% of the time, anyhow. Get proactive as soon as possible if you think you or a loved one have been exposed to these terrible microbes! It's worth it to be a bit paranoid, if it means avoiding a life of misery of chronic LD!
