This was my very first symptom of Lyme Disease along with eye and noise sensitivity. My daughter just spilled some nail polish remover in her room and the smell is getting to me bad. I am all the way in my room and I can smell it. I feel agitated and just screamed at her. I feel bad for that now but the smell really stirred my emotions. Why does this happen? Does anyone know?

Does anyone else have this or any other sensitivity?

You are not alone!! My scense of smell is extreme. Its worse than when I was pregnant with my sons. It can be so bad sometimes, what others find as just a "smell" it usually is 10 worse to me.

Count me in...I sometimes smell stuff that no one else can.  How creepy is that.

I'm the same way.  Cleaning products are so bad I feel like my throat is closing up and I have to leave the room.  I also can smell things that others can't like mold or dog/cat urine (when we were looking at houses).  It drives me nuts.  I think it started in my early 20's which is when the doctor thinks I was infected.

Oh wow, thanks guys for replying. I'm sorry you're dealing with this too. It's annoying for sure. The smell was so strong, that I felt like I had swollowed the nail polish remover. Ugh!

KO: You reminded me that I've been able to smell things that others couldn't smell for years now. I mean, this was like 15 years ago. My husband used to tease me about it all the time. That makes me wonder if I was bitten when I was younger. I think I was because I remember having emotional problems back then.

Sensitivity to chemicals (MCS) is very common in Lyme. It was explained to me that it is because your liver is already overloaded with toxins from LD and another toxin (like nail polish remover) is an extra burden for your liver. Does that make sense?  I am sensitive to all chemicals and smells.  D

I've had sensitivities to smell, sights, and sounds. Fortunately, it usually doesn't last more than a few hours. It's like having a really annoying super-power.

Wow, LOL, I was thinking about posting the question too. I'm walking around my house thinking I smell some kind of perfume etc, I'm walking around the house sniffing stuff trying to figure it out. All my bath clean towels smell funky to me etc. And yes it's also worse than when I was pregnant too. OK so I'm not crazy, LOL.

its funny you brought this up. my b/f thinks i'm crazy cause i can smell the milk in the tanker trucks when they go by. and lord help me when a cattle truck comes close to me.

even if all the windows are up. i hate the smell of them. it makes me sick to my tummy. and i know i can be in 1 end of the house and a puppy goes potty i smell it :(
good thing moma is good at cleaning them up :)

as for the smell of washed cloths i always rinse them 2 times. this helps to remove all soap smell too.

Thanks everyone! Does anyone know why it would make me agitated? Is it maybe because the liver is overloaded like Dowa said? Isn't there something called "angry liver" or something like that? I know that's probably not the name, but I've read somewhere that when the liver is overloaded with toxins, it cause that person to get angry or agitated. I guess maybe from it releasing toxins into the body and brain.

CajunGrl....I have this same thing going on....My kids are always spraying crap.
And they all know it makes me Sicker, and Extremely Angry...yelling angry.

I was riding in a car with some friends and smelled a skunk... No one else smelled
it until we got 10 miles down the rode and then they could smell it (ROAD KILL)
See I was right...they all thought I was crazy..

I kinda like that symptom, makes me feel like I have bionic powers..HA! HA!

I too have smell, taste, hearing, eye & touch sensitivities. Have had them a long time, and have often been accused of smelling/tasting things that don't exist...sucks, because I know I'm right in what I smell/taste, but nobody else can smell/taste it but me.

Razzle. you reminded me if something that happen more then 30 yrs ago. i was going to a friends home and i smelled cake about a mile from there home. there was so others on the car with me.

i keep saying i smell cake, they couldnt smell anything at all. low and behold, when we got there they had a cake in the oven about ready to take it out.

also about this same time frame. heard a fog jumping thro the Grass in the back side of our home. it was around 11 at night and there was about 5 kids there. i asked them to be quiet as i heard something. they thought i was bluffing them.

i whent inside got a flashlight. and sure enough there was a fog. scared 1 guy when it jumped.hehe

so i may of had lyme for over 30 yrs now? this all happened in Tn. and yes i have had many tick bites throughout my life, as i worked with both dogs and horses. i almost lived in the woods as a child.

as fare back as i can remember i have always been teased as haven bionic hearing and smell. and if it moves i see it. even a spider at night, as i hate them more then i do ticks if that possible.

I don't think smell and other sensitivities by themselves indicate Lyme ~ there are other reasons a person can have sensory hypersensitivity.

Yeah, I absolutely hate spiders...they like to bite me, even spiders the "experts" claim cannot bite a human... I got bit by a daddy-long-legs type spider and my whole hand swelled up (the bite was on the back of my hand). To me, the webs they spin are as bad as the spiders themselves...yuk!

RD: -Thats crazy! I bet they freaked when they saw the cake, lol. Not too far from where I live, I can smell a leather smell in the same spot when driving home. It smells like a saddle, lol. I love that smell too. My husband and daughter look at me like I'm crazy but I bet there is leather somewhere around there. I was also told I had bionic hearing and smell. Hey, sometimes it works in our advantage.

I am very sensitive to smells. Sometimes it gets rough at work. The smells from the staff lounge and bathroom come into my classroom and can be overwhelming. I don't mind the food smells except when someone burns the microwave popcorn. Some people use the disinfectant spray as air freshener in the bathroom. I have to open the door to clear out my room, it makes us gag.

I've complained but there is nothing that can be done about it. We've posted a sign telling people not to use the disinfectant spray in the air but not everyone listens.

I also have sensitive hearing. I can hear the mosquito ring tone that most people over 19 can't hear and I am a LOT older than 19. I hear the lights and computers. Sometimes, I go into the special education rooms and alert the teachers to the high pitched noises that they can't hear. One teacher shut off the computer that made a high pitched whine and noticed that her autistic students were calmer and better behaved. The sound drove me crazy in the 5 minutes I spent in there, I can't imagine how those poor students felt listening to it all day and not being able to tell anyone. Unfortunately, sometimes the adults don't believe me about the noise and don't do anything about it and the kids suffer.

OMG!!! you are all my people!!!

I smell EVERYTHING!!! Once I was walking through the parking lot at the airport and knew that someone had nail polish remover spill in a suitcase. I also have hypercussis and hear all kinds of funky frequencies! someone dialing a phone two rooms away kind of wierd!
People are always a gasp when I answer my phone in my purse, across the room, because I heard it beep once on low over all the conversation. Biggest pet peeve is people that douse themselves in perfume in public...its cruel for people like us. Instant migraine.

I also have tinnitus as one of my symptoms and the ringing is differnt in each ear! really annoying trust me! After my first IM Rocephin I was laying down thinking that there arn't locusts in San Francisco, then I sat up and realized that it was my right ear! URGH!!

For me I think the anger part is because there is a consequence for us. More pain, nausea, migraine ect...and I am already always at the brink. Also, I way have Lyme Rage. the buffer between a normal response and and outburst is VERY thin. Even something as simple as opening a drawer that sticks, can lauch me into a rage... and tear it out of the wall!
I'm so glad to have found you all. This has been one crazy lonely journey down the tubes!

welcome to the board. i'm glad you found us to, but wish you didnt need to find us.

as for the folks who bath in there perfume. all i can say is this. stop with the smoking laws and start with laws on the amount of perfume one wears, as more folks have allergies to it then smoke.

me and my mother have both had to leave restaurants do to someones perfume. my mom even went into annaflect shock once.

then you add lyme to the mix and ohh boy. in some ways its good i cant go out much anymore.

i hope you ringing ears clear up soon. as i hate it myself, but can deal with the rest. even enjoy some of it. as i never miss a phone call..LOL

Yes - I have smell sensitivities - but after first getting 'bitten' I would lose my sense of smell ! - didn't affect my sense of taste though - wierd.

I hear you about the ringing in the ears. I get that too. I don't have it as often now but I used to have ringing nearly everyday. I'm so glad it calmed down for me. I hope you get some relief yourself soon!

A lot of us are sensitive to smells but does anyone have a hard time breathing along with it. Whenever I can smell trash, perfume, cleaner etc. I can't breathe

Yes, many perfume odors can trigger Asthma for me. Also, when I smell chemical smells (windex, bleach, etc.), my body goes into "I don't want to breathe" mode and it becomes really, really hard to take a breath or exhale. It is different than an Asthma attack...with Asthma, it is involuntary airway constriction and feels like I'm breathing through a straw; with the "I don't want to breathe" thing it is like my cells are telling me to not put that poison inside and I feel like I'm being smothered.

My eyes are often irritated as well when I smell something intense that bothers me... Eye doc calls it "allergic rhinoconjunctivitis" - basically, hives on my eyelids, the part that touches my eyeballs...really itchy, teary/watery, burning, and sometimes stabbing pain...not good.

My sense of smell is really messed up. I can't stand to smell perfume or cigarettes and I suffer from phantom smells. Noise sensitivity is much worst for me.
