Hi all

I am brand new to this forum. My life partner has both Lyme disease and bartonellosis, and has suffered for more than two years. I have put together a Lyme/bartonellosis website in order to educate our friends and family about her condition. I add to it as I gain more information. If you are interested it is located at http://www.benbrew.com/lb/lb.html . I welcome all suggestions and criticisms.

Hi Ben,

Welcome to the forum! Great info but some of it I don't agree with. We have several members here that have only treated with alternative methods and have been in remission for years. Supplements, herbs, homeopathic remedies all have healing properties. Garlic and echinacea act like an antibiotic and kill bacteria. I have herxed on these two combinations. In my opinion and from what I've researched, I do not think that antibiotics are the only option to kill off BB bacteria.

Another antibiotic that crosses the blood brain barrier is Rocephin. Flagyl is also used to kill the cyst form.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Everything else you have there is great.

I have to strongly agree with CajunGrl. Especially since it lists "alternative" treatment as dangerous. Alternative treatment has been known to cure diseases where mainstream medicine has not.

If Ben is basing all of this information off his partner than I think that should be noted. I also think it is amazing at the time and effort that Ben has put into this site!

Thank you for your feedback on my site. I will alter the wording about alternative therapies, and I'll state that some people have noticed benefits from them. Should have this done by the end of this week.

By the way, my girlfriend has many of the symptoms you mention in your blog: whole body hurts, including the bottoms of her feet, as well as psychological problems (irritability, anger, crying).  Like you, her doctor suspects she's been infected for years, but possibly got re-infected a few years ago and was initially diagnosed in 2007.  She did ceftriaxone via a PICC line for a month, got better for a while and relapsed.  Last month she started azithromycin and has been herxing like crazy.  The doctor plans to eventally add rifampin and minocycline.  It will be a total of 9 months of treatment.  It has taked a huge physical and emotional toll on her, not to mention our relationship.

Hi BenBrew,
You have put in a lot of time doing your research and it is very interesting and well done. Your girl friend is very lucky to have someone who care so much about her recovery - and obviously you have posted this for us to see because you hope it may help some of us as well.

Although some people say they have recovered without the use of abx, I think it is important to at least knock the disease down and get it under control before you attempt to keep it in remission with alternative medicine. As Bb's closest relative is syphilis, it is not something to try to cure with a simple homemade remedy. If these things worked, there would have been no syphilis to plague the world for hundreds of years. Maybe some people were cured of it but most weren't. If I knew I had syphilis I sure would not gamble with my treatment. I would take penicillin.

I don't believe abx will always cure Bb and other tick born disease like bartonella. I tend to think it is probably impossible to completely wipe it out - would be like getting all the weed seeds out of your lawn. Instead you need to promote optimum health with good nutrition, life style, necessary supplements and immune boosting herbs to keep it in remission. I do not understand how some people can stay on abx for years and years. That seems too dangerous as it is so harsh on your body. You can become so toxic your liver is badly damaged and your immune system can just shut down. My approach is to stay as healthy as I can but when the weeds start to take over again, get out the chemical sprayer. I just hope I can hold up to the chemicals as I simply can't tolerate them for any length of time before they begin to make me equally sick. So I am on and off abx and in between using herbs until they fail. I was bitten the end of May 2006, diagnosed correctly Feb. 2008. Nearly two years later, I am still trying to get well. It is a hard battle. I am doing my 10th month of heavy duty abx.
