Update: I saw my Lyme doctor yesterday and was told that for now I should keep taking the pred and Imuran as prescribed. Eventually the goal is to get me completely off immunosuppressants but I guess that will happen very slowly.
My hepatologist says he's OK with reducing my meds if necessary for the Lyme disease treatment protocol to succeed....he would prefer that I remain on EITHER pred OR Imuran at half of my current dose(s). But I think he would agree with the ultimate goal of no meds at all.
Apparently the fact that I take plaquenil (immunosuppressant prescribed for my lupus) may be a very good thing because it was originally developed as an anti-malarial drug and Babesia is similar to malaria so plaquenil can help if I have Babesia as well. They're testing me for co-infections now.
I've been prescribed Doxycycline (oral) to see how I do with it.....keeping fingers crossed!
