Due to a problem ordering my newest set of prescriptions, and also the timing of my last doctor's appointment, I ran out of antibiotics for two weeks. By day 7 I felt pretty bad, and by day 10 I felt like I'd gone right back to where I was when I first started treatment in August. The symptoms that had improved the most (almost the only thing that improved at all, actually) were my bartonella symptoms, and those are the ones that came back.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? Now that I am back on antibiotics, will I bounce right back? Or will it take another 5 months to get back to where I was?

the same thing happened to me. 2 weeks off meds by the second week I felt lousy. SO depressing after treating over a year! I am back on meds and feeling a bit better. I think it just takes longer for some of us. You are still early on in your treatment so I wouldn't worry. I think you just need to keep plugging away to knock more of the bugs down. Hang in there and I hope better days are ahead for you.

Lyme is said to be slow to replicate, co-infections are the ones that are said to come back quickly when stopping abx.

So, from what you have said...sounds like your Bart just reared its ugly head.

No I do not believe you start back at the beginning...you just have to knock them back down again.

Hang in there!

Thanks guys,

As I said, I was really hoping I wouldn't have to start from square one. I've been back on antibiotics for two days now, and I think I might be starting to improve. Hopefully things go quickly!

bucci- I was on Rifampin, Ceftin and Bactrim, but now my doctor has switched the Bactrim for Minocycline. They were pills, not IV. I did (and do) get quite a bit worse every time I switch antibiotics. The second time I switched, I got really really sick for over 6 weeks. Hence why I don't want to repeat the last little bit! I've had Lyme for 2.5 year now, but only been treating it for 5 months.

I don't think I have sciatica, but I don't really know for sure, since I have a lot of leg pain in general. I think if you go to the discussion labeled "New to Lyme.....Start Here" has a list of symptoms of all the different co-infections that go with Lyme. Different doctors also have slightly different interpretations. My doctor thinks my shin and heel pain, muscle twitches, nerve pain and tingling, brain fog, and mood swings are bartonella symptoms. Of course, some of them can also just come from Lyme, so as I said, its tricky.

There is a rash that goes with bartonella- it looks like stretch marks or long scratches along your back (and other places too, I think). If you google "cat scratch rash" or "bartonella rash" you'll get a lot of hits.

I was feeling pretty good on amox for 4 months in summer. Dr. took me off and put me on doxy to treat erlichosis. I went down hill so fast and still trying to recover. Lyme is so confusing though cause I wonder if I was just herxing on the doxy or perhaps it was just working in the differnet way. In any case, I am not just starting zithromax as I am having terrible joint and muscle pains. Anxious to see how I will feel.
