Hi everyone,

I am a new member.  I had Lyme Disease 2 years ago for 2 years.  I got it in my overgrown backyard of my new house about 3 weeks after moving in.  Then I got pregnant and have had 3 children since.  I struggled with diagnosis for the first 2 years and finally fell upon an antibiotic treatment that mostly cured me.  Occasionally I experience flares… that’s what I have come to call them- Glimpses of what I felt like during those difficult 2 years.

My question, is it generally believed that once you have Lyme Disease, you will always be a carrier but when symptom free it is like a remission, yet the bacteria could be sitting and waiting for opportunity to take over again and would explain flares or even complete return.

I can live with symptoms as they are now, but should I be trying to completely eradicate it while I am healthy?  If that makes sense!  Thanks!

badticks,

I don't think we are ever cured from Lyme disease. We are put into remission, like you stated above. I believe that sometimes, yes, the bacteria could be hiding somewhere in the body, especially if you have Chronic Lyme disease, and come back out later when you are off of medication. It is very hard to eradicate when it is chronic because it gets inside the tissue, muscle, bone, brain, etc. That's why most LLMD's use a combination of antibiotics and others like Flagyl to bust open the cyst form. Sometimes though, we are left with the devastation that the bacteria has caused and that could be where some of the symptoms are coming from.
