Just curious what type of Probotics everybody uses? What dose? How often and how long before/after your ABX? Local lady with Lyme recommended Jarro Dophilus (yellow bottle). Anybody heard of this? Pretty cheap on Vitacost.

InfectedinFL,

Any probiotic that is refrigerated is good to take. Keeping it refrigerated keeps the bacteria alive. I take Probiotic MPF from Progressive Laboratories but I don't think you can get it online. I get it from a friend that has a distributing license. My bottle has 1.25 billion Lactobacillus Acidophilus and 1.25 billion Bifido Longum. It also has zinc and a few other things in it as well.

I take 3 tablets of Jarrow Yum-Yum Dophilus (I know, it's corny) daily because it is chewable and doesn't send my system into a tailspin. More potent probiotics seem to be too strong for me and constipate me badly.

I try not to take the probiotics within 2-3 hours of the antibiotics, but I'm on IV abx (not oral) so not even sure if it matters... Since I hook up the abx in the late afternoon, that means I try to get the probiotic in the morning or lunchtime.

If this is the one you are talking about, it seems to be an excellent choice http://www.vitacost.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Jarro-Dophilus-EPS-Enhanced-Probiotic-System . Five star rating from 63 users. That says a lot right there.

I don't use these as I primarily take Klaire Labs Acidophilus. I would consider taking these but I noticed it has soy in it. Not sure why it would have soy in it but I tend to avoid products with soy in it. Otherwise, it looks like a great product.

On the other lyme forums I noticed the most frequently talked about and recommended probiotic is Theralac. Unfortunately, you can only purchase them online http://www.theralac.com/

You should take your probiotics 2 hours before or 2 hours after your antibiotics.

I use kefir for my probiotics. It has loads of beneficial bacteria, not just acidophilus & bifidophilus. I use the milk kefir, but it can easily be made with any type of milk (things like coconut milk, some soy milks) or even water!!

I my probiotics 2 hrs before or at least 2 hrs after any abx I might be on at the time.

I use ABX support from a mail order company called Archeus.
I'm not sure if you have to see the doctor they are affiliated with to be able to order because they
asked me my doctors name when I first ordered from them.
I break open the capsule and add it to my Super Aloe Vera Juice, twice a day.

Cold source ONLY. If on abx. 3 x 10 billion units a day and for maitenance, 1 x 6 billion units a day 1 week on, 2 weeks off.

It's always good to cycle any supplements.

Peacesoul is correct. I forgot to add that I take up to six tablets a day. When I first started, I started with two a day, then worked my way up. It upset my stomach a little.

Any cold course from a good health food store. They can tell you which is best.

For 120 capsules, you should pay about $15.
There are much better ones, but they are natural source that are made with baby stool.........(yuck), not thanks. I'll take the veggie source.

keep it simple

I use Pearls brand of probiotics. Can be purchased at walmart or online. It is in special extra thick capsule that is supposed to dissolve in intestines instead of stomach, thus more of the probiotice get to the gut where they belong :-)

Dear Great Expectations,

I just found out that I suffer from Lyme and Addison's and am very concerned about the need to take steroids which my LLMD says are contraindicated in Lyme. You mentioned in one of your posts that you see an LLMD who is also an endo or at least can also treat your addisons. Am wondering if you would be willing to send me a message with the name of your LLMD, along with any advice you can give me about dealing with these 2 conditions at once. I am feeling overwhelmed and terrified, to be honest.

Thank you for your time!
Andrea

addisonandlyme, You might want to do a separate post for Great Expectations if they haven't answered you yet.

When I was on abx I used Florastor, very expensive, but while I was on it I had no problems.

I'm on abx and struggle to maintain balance; I keep getting overtaken by yeast and other yucky stuff on my tongue. The best mix I've found that works most of the time is:

Klaire Labs Ther-biotic Complete (25+ billion CFUs, multi-species friendly bacteria) 1-2 daily. This is the best probiotic I've ever found. It totally regulated my digestive system.
Florastor (saccharomyces boulardii lyo - a friendly yeast) 1 daily
Bio=K plus CL1285 (50 billion friendly bacteria per bottle) 1 bottle daily. Really helps with the tongue.
Standard Process prebiotic Inulin 6920 to create an attractive environment for all of the other stuff. 1 scoop daily

This does all work well for my digestive system, and until two days ago, I was elated about how well it was working for my mouth. I think I'm just in a bad cycle right now.

Ther-Biotic from Klaire labs, my doc told me was the best, don't know if it is true but I they seem to be working fine.
Loves horse riding, sailing, skiing and diving! Lyme nor anything else will stop me!

Primadophilus two a day. I'm not on abx anymore, but the doc said to keep taking it. I use Culturelle when I travel as it doesn't have to be refrigerated.

So, I am assuming yogurt and off the shelf Acidophilus (1 billion active cultures) is not sufficient? Currently on only 1 abx and no IV.
Bit 1972: Acute and chronic tonsillitis, UTI, miscarraige, appendicitis, hypoglycemia,  chronic neck pain w/ crushed vertibrae, chronic severe back pain, mitral valve prolapse, depression, resolution?

Bit Mother's Day 2007: Lyme, Babesia microti, hypothyroidism, EBV, HHV6, Parvovirus B19, low adrenals &misc other hormones, depression, anxiety, more of the above.

Unsweetened plain yogurt with active cultures is good. Plain, unsweetened Kefir is better (not as tasty in my opinion). 1 Billion Acidophilus is good (I take 10 Billion), but it's best to get refrigerated kind. Some people differ with that opinion, but that's what I believe just based on a lot of reading of different opinions on the matter.

I'm not on abx, but because of my messed up gut I take three different brands of probiotics with various strains and mix them all up. I take them with meals and prior to going to bed. Hasn't cleared up all my stomach problems, but it's helped considerably.

Sometimes you just need to try to find what works best for you. But, for sure, yogurt is good as long as it isn't laden with sugar and it has live cultures in it. My wife eats yogurt (Stonyfield brand because it's organic) three times a day--she really likes it! smilewinkgrin
