I have tested a number of times with Igenex by blood with no positive results and was thinking of doing the urine test. I was wondering if any of you here have done it and can you also have false results with that as well? Also wondering if they can test for co-infections with the urine. I have a compromised immune system and I think the negative results via blood are the result of my not making antibodies and dont know if the urine test would be any more accurate if that is the case. I think I have probably had Lyme for many years and also do not know if the urine test would show it now.  Any information about the urine test is appreciated. Thanks~ Dowa

The urine test was my first Igenex test.  To start the test I was put on an antibiotic for 5 days (if you are already on an antibiotic you change to a different one). Collected urine fist thing in the morning on the 4th, 5th and 6th day each time freezing the sample.  2 of my 3 samples where positive.  I don't know about co-infections.

Dom: Thank you so much for your reply, I appreciate it. Do you mind if I ask you if you had ever had a blood test by Igenex and was it also positive?  Where the blood was negative, just trying to figure out if the urine would show antigens. Thank you again ~  D

I would not rely on that test.

The cdc send them 5 normal urine samples from people who do not have Lyme, and 2 came back postive, and all the numbers ranged from 400-4000, when they should have been normal.

If your not cdc positive I would be very carefull

before I did my igenix blood work and the other 2 labs my doctor gave me teasel root and japaneese knotweed to take 2 droppers twice a day for 7 days before all the blood work.

i think she did this to take all the guess work out of the testing . It is a tricky thing getting right answers. If you want her name you can email me and maybe your doctor can call her.

it's too bad all these doctors are not n same page but they all are learning new stuff everyday.

I wonder if there is a lyme doc chat group where they share info and problems with one another. It sure would put them all at a better advantage.

Yes, I did have blood test at Igenex.  The first time my IgM was equivocal and my IGG was positive.  Three years later I tested again, IgM positive and IGG positive. I've never tested CDC positive.  My LabCorp ELISA was also positive at 1.47, Western blot only had 1 band.  Three year later my ELISA was positive again at 1.40, this time  Qwest, Western blot had  2 bands this time.

The urine test was changed after I had it done.  Now, a positive test is followed by a reverse Western blot.  I liked the urine test because it's looking for killed bacteria.  What could be more reliable then finding the killed bacteria?  One drawback would be that people don't shed antigens everyday so it not that easy to test positive.  The antibiotics I took when I tested, killed Lyme which I shed in my urine and increased chances for positive results.

I also had positive MRI's and SPECT scans done at  Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Wanted to say one other thing.

Not all people or even dogs that have Lyme are sick.  Lyme can be in your body but dormant for years.  My vet finds positive dogs all the time that have no symptoms and others with symptoms that test negative. The same problems doctors have with people.

When blood test are so unrealable and not every person that has Lyme has symptoms, I don't know how the CDC can say that someones blood or urine is normal.

Dom: If you test positive with the blood test by Igenex, what would be the reason for doing the urine test. I guess I am trying to figure out if the urine would show anything where the blood test was negative.

Bucci: Thanks for the offer of your doc, but I am doing this on my own, have  no LLMD here.

Yes, it is possible for the urine test to show something when the blood test is negative. Suggest you call & discuss with IGeneX - they may be able to give you a more detailed answer to your question.

Take care,

I had the Igenex urine test after a LP.  The lab, Quest, used to much of my spinal fulid to do a MS test and didn't have enough to do the Lyme test, so the doc who was doing a Lyme study, had me do the urine test.  At the time he had not used the test much but couldn't do another LP.  He also didn't draw blood in his office.  It was a few years later when I saw a different doctor that I had the blood test done at Igenex.

I had the urine test done after about 2 years on abx from Igenex. It showed nothing...and my blood tests (3 of them) only ever showed 41 band.

I would think after 2 years if I had any dead bacteria in my body it would have shown up. I think my doctor did this test only because I wasn't getting well and he wanted to try and get confirmation that I did have Lyme so he could decide whether we should continue on with treatments.

KPT: Same here, my 41 had like four + and then many other bands were IND. Its such a puzzle.

Thank you everyone for your help, I will call Igenex.

Dowa- yeah my 41 was +++ and then I had a bunch of IND's also..My very last Igenex I had which I looked up was in October 2008 and at that time I only had 1 IND on both tests and that of course was the 41.

Hi... few comments...

Dom, a LOT of people will likely test lyme positive, and yes are fighting it well.  The jury is out though, because many folks are getting sick NOT after RE-infection, but after some form of trauma.  So a 4 yr old body could be fighting it well (keeping the load low, encysting, etc), but after his 5yr old immunization day comes, can suddenly develop 'autism', or 'ticking', and all these sensitivities, aka lyme.  Or a 40 yr old can get 30 days of treatment and be ok.  Then she gets a bout of salmonella and wham!  she is suddenly not getting better, getting lyme symptoms she never had.  Or a 20 year old had lyme when he was 8, and gets into a car crash while in college and suddenly starts seizing.  Then comes a stiff neck, then achy joints, etc.

These are all real examples.  I have a million more.

There is a chance some of them had been re-infected, but the times of the events above lines up perfectly (i.e. the very night of the immunizations).  Also, they didn't see or feel (a bump) or a tickbite, had no rash, weren't outside, etc.

Someone else asked if there was a website for these docs.  There is one I know of, it is MMI (Microbes in Mental Illness).  A lot of them seem to be on there.

A lot of them also belong to ILADS and ACAM (Integrative Medical Organization), so they communicate through these and lyme conferences.  I agree though, it would be such a blessing if more of them agreed on things!  So much controversy within controversy!

:-) Tracy

Hi, sorry, just the first part was, I was spinning off of what you said (regarding folks or dogs having lyme but being asymptomatic).  THe rest was just general response... some to motox. Tracy

Thank you, I'm already aware of all that you said.  I'm fighting Lyme for 12 years now, infected probably a year longer and re-infected in 2005 and again last year.    I saw the ticks and the bullseye.

The general consensus is that this test is very accurate when it comes to a positive result because it tests for the dead fragments of the bacteria itself. There are false negatives though.

I've told many specialists how I received my diagnoses of Lyme and the results of my tests, and all of them have even acknowledged the reliability of the PCR urine test.

I agree. PCR is the most reliable testing method we have right now, as it relies on looking for the DNA of the bacteria, not an immune response like the ELISA and WB.
