Antibiotics do not treat or prevent viral infections, therefore you can still catch a cold/flu while on antibiotics. Because antibiotics kill off the "friendlies" in the intestine, this has the effect of reducing the immune system because these "friendlies" help keep the balance of bacteria & fungi (candida, etc.) in the mucosal boundary in the gut. This balance is an important part of the immune system, and is the main way we have of preventing harmful infections caused by food/air/water exposure. But when the balance is disturbed through the use of antibiotics, then this barrier no longer functions optimally and we are then more susceptible to undesirable infections getting through the barrier and into our bloodstream. This is why it is so important to be on a probiotic supplement through out Lyme treatment.
