I saw a rheumatologist last week, and he told me that based on my most recent western blot bands, the B. burgdorferi are gone from my body. But my joints still hurt and I still have a stiff neck. He said these symptoms would go away in weeks to months with physical therapy. Has anyone had a similar experience? Should my symptoms disappear with the spirochetes dying? Thanks.

No. You can take a western blot everyday and get a different result in my opinion. The bacteria has the ability to hide and the western blot tests the antibodies anyway. If you are still have joint pain and stiff neck, you still need treatment. Get to an LLMD. A rheumatologist is not going to treat lyme correctly. Did you get a copy of your lab work? Do that first and see what bands show up. You have to be your own dr. when it comes to this disease. Only you know your body. Don't be inclined to believe someone else, dr. or not. Don't make the mistake I made which made me sicker and sicker. Drs. are only human. they do not know everything.

If you still have these symptoms you probably still have Lyme, they will certainly not get better without anymore treatment. How long have you been on antibiotics and have you been tested for co infections? I would highly recommend that you seek out an llmd asap, rheumatologists know very little about how to treat Lyme, it is a very complex disease and can only be properly treated by an llmd, the sooner you see one the better.

Good luck

Thanks. I've got an appointment with an LLMD, but the earliest I can get in is still 3 weeks from now (and I made the appointment 3 weeks ago).

Littlehutton - I was on antibiotics (100mg doxy BID) for 7 weeks, but am off them now. I still haven't been tested for co-infections, but will ask to be.

Hi Avivia,
I agree with the others, you need to see that LLMD. If you have symptoms - you have an infection.

100 mgs of Doxy three times a day is not enough to rid your body of the spirochetes, they have only retreated into your joints & muscles. WB will only tell you what can be seen in the blood, at that time.

For a good understanding of what dosages of abx are needed, you can read through an article by a well respected LLMD - Dr. Joseph Burrascano, titled "Advanced Topics on Lyme Disease. You can read it here:

Avivia .... I also went to a rheumatologist after 30 months of treatment with lyme disease. She didnt do any blood work but only wanted to see my rescent blood work. She also told me that I should get a second opion with my Lyme disease. and she also agreed that me being on meds for 30 months on and off was bad for my system. She had some good points an bad ones. But also I am going threw PT also...

But I believe that the Lyme infection is still in my spine and kneck but I have past injurys and were starting to bother me due to the lyme. also i have early sighns of arthristis in my kneck that of a 40 something year old would have. also have a straight curve in my kneck instead of curve. I am also very sore on my whole spine.

when i move my kneck around I hear crunching and popping... which my LLMD told me it was lyme but the Rhumy told me it was normal hmmmm that doesnt seam right to me.. she said it is air bubbles that I hear,,, who knows what it is and what it sounds like but to me the crunching has gotten worse.

at my second treatment with a massage I think I had a herx reaction. I had flu symptoms for a week and felt drained... have gone a few more times since and the last session I feel worse with more achy. but then she said you will feel like that first then better after... it has helped with all the tightness in my kneck and shoulders.

wow sorry to ramble I kinda lost track of what i was suppose to say lol....but take care and I hope you find answeres BIG HUGS

Thanks, Jennie. It's great that this is such a supportive community. I hope the massage helps with your neck and spine!
