Hi All,

It's been a while since I posted.  I have a GC for a massage and was trying to remember what a post from a long time ago said about what was a good type of massage for LD and what were ones to be avoided.  Any personal suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks, KO

P.S. Hope everyone is surviving the holiday madness!

My LLMD told me not to get a deep tissue massge (after I had already gotten one) - I think it gave be a big-time herx...so, in the end, it wasn't bad. Just wasn't too pleasant directly afterwards.

Hi yazzer,

did it hurt, or was it painful while they were doing the massage?  Was the herx like one you would normally experience?  Did they know that you had LD, I was wondering if I should or shouldn't tell them.

Thanks, KO

no - it felt good! But, afterwards, I had a huge increase in my neurological symptoms - brain fog, dizziness, trouble concentrating, etc. I did tell my massage therapist I had LD - they don't care. In fact, my therapist had fibromyalgia that she thought was Lyme and ended up going to see my LLMD!

I think the theory is that the Lyme buried deep in the tissues is set free with the massage and then exposed to the abx....therefore causing a mass die-off.

I'm not on abx so I wonder if it would be a bad thing for me to have done?

I'm getting a lymphatic drainage massage next week...not sure if it's good or bad for Lyme, but I'll let you know afterwards (that is if it doesn't make me so sick that I can't type!).

Interesting to read about deep-tissue massages. I have scoliosis and went to a myofacial-release specialist (message therapist) for several years when I was a teenager. I started getting very light-headed and dizzy all the time, and she always said these were good reactions - even though I don't think they had anything to do with my spine and no one knew I had lyme disease at the time. I went every week for a few years, along with other physical therapy appointments.

I posted it in another thread - yes I had it done a few days ago and it was wonderful (except for the part when she said, "Okay, you're all done!")!

She asked me what kind of pressure I wanted, and while I prefer the kinds of massages that hurt - I asked for somewhere in between that and gentle - so it was just the right amount of pressure. I couldn't tell you for sure what was actually done, although I did feel a bit of a drippy sensation with all the work done in my face and neck - which I'm assuming was the lymphatic drainage part.

When I was done I felt so relaxed - a little tired and out of it, but overall I felt better - rejuvenated. Later that night I did have a bit of a herx - a little stronger than usual (mostly pain all over), but it was gone by morning. Combined with some other adjustments I've made in the last few days, I've been feeling better every day - and I definitely feel clearer and lighter, if that makes sense.

I'm so glad to hear that it made you feel better, Border!! I know on the odd occasion when my doc gives me a Lymphatic drainage massage, that after the slight to moderate herx, I do feel better. I am also taking a tincture that helps encourage my lymph glands to 'bath' in the lymph fluid a little better.
