My ND recommended Primal Defense Ultra Probiotics, so I went right out and got them. I took them a few times and felt terrible each time (shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and just generally crappy). My ND said this was “die-off”, but after a Google search, I found there is some controversy and side effects with Primal Defense Ultra due to bacterial soil organisms.

My gut feeling was that my reaction wasn’t die-off, and after reading these articles, I’d rather play it safe and just discontinue using Primal Defense.

Can anyone recommend a good quality probiotic?

Acodiphilus in the refregierated section. They should be enertic coated and you should take at least 10 billion per day if you're not on antibiodics. I have learned a good probiodic is always refrigerated. You can also eat some plain yogurt and/or drink some plain keffir on top of the Acodiphilus.

I use ultra flora IB 60 billion, and tru flora which is a mix of a bunch of different strains. I get it straight from my doctor (although I'm pretty sure you can order it online) and it's always worked really well for me!

if your gut is really a mess, which many of us have , you may have to take upwards of a a few hundred billion a day. When gut tested i had zero amounts of lactobacillus and about 1/4 of bifobacterium and none of these many otc products did much to help..so even though these 3 probiotics below are expensive, when you consider the fact that i probably spent a $1000 buying others that did nothing, its well worth it..no good gut no good healing

--i have not used but others say its good

and i think the one that helped me the most was living streams probiotics
i order mine from this lady who has mostly recovered as has her son from lyme and related issues

I've tried many and the one I like is called HLC probitioics. I found them online with a handful of great reviews, and I have noticed a difference with them.

I hate to be blunt, but how do you know if it "works for you" LOL. Does that mean you are regular? Or it gets the candida under control? Just curious

I have used primal defense once in the past and it kicked my butt. I mean, the die off was immense and I was sick for a while. One weird thing about it that I hadn't experienced before was the emotions that also surfaced. It was crazy, I started replaying past problems and refeeling it all as I was detoxing. I don't know if I could handle it again. I don't know anything about the controversy though.
It's one thing I worry about as I look forward to my first round of diox. I have a lot of "crap" stored up, I don't know if I am ready to deal with it.
Has anyone else experienced this?

When in active infection and on abx, the dose should be 50 billion units a day. Once abx has ceased, the dose needs to be 25-30 billion a day.
The strain needs to be human form and also needs to have 4 different strains (not just Acodiphilus). Also, this is VERY important, they should NOT be enteric coated due to the fact the capsule will then only release in the large intestine and it needs to be absorbed at the small intestine.
Also, ALL probiotics need to be taken with food. Never on an empty stomach.

One last tip, take probiotics with allicin for better absorption. The Allison is the only natural anti-microbial that does not kill the strains of probiotics.

I just did a two day pharm. seminar on probiotics so this is all fresh news.

I cannot give the brands I use in my practice on this site, but if you want to know the brands I use on myself and use on my clients, feel free to email me. Would be more than happy to help.

I cannot answer all your health related questions but can help as much as I can

Maybe my LLMD was afraid to tell me to take TOO many probiodics (right now he asked me to take 4 pills, 2 hours after abx which is 20 billion) because I have a Candida overgrowth. Maybe he thought the die off would be too extreme for me. I took an extra 4 after my second dose last night, but I hope that's not a bad thing with an active candida overgrowth.

You cannot overdose on probiotics. The die off is mostly likely from the abx and not the probiotics. Keep your liver clean and die off will be smooth sailing.

Actually you CAN take too much probiotics. Having too much good bacteria, and not enough bad can have a negative effect on your immune system, since it needs a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria. I'd say no more than a minimum of 40 billion a day.

The best probiotic I've tried is called Orthobiotic.

It contains 7 strains, along with the strain saccharomyces boulardi (very important for lyme healing) with 20 billion CFU. It also has been scientifically formulated for room temperature storage, so no refridgeration is needed. You can get at most health stores for around $30 for 30 capsules.
