Hello! I am taking 100mg of Doxy 2x a day. I was wondering if this is a low dose. Is anyone else taking Doxy, and if so, at what dose?

My email is available if you don't want to publicly post it.

I would really appreciate any replies!!!

Thx

Hi mom, I was taking that dose when I first started treatment. It did nothing for me. That is the same dose that my dermatologist would prescribe to me for acne. I don't like doxy, I thought it made my symptoms worst. I know everyone is different but i think since i have been on doxy for several years due to acne that my body became immune to it. I am now on Ceftin 2-500 mg per day. Just started this so don't really know the effects yet. Finding the right antibotic is very stressful!

That is a low dose. Most with chronic Lyme work their way up to 400mg per day. They also generally add in a macrolide and a cyst-busting medication for pure Lyme. If you have co-infections there are other antibiotics used for those.

I thought the dose is low. I know with my adopted Weimariener (76lbs) he was diagnosed with heartworms and give 350 mg 2x a day. I am far from 76 pds haha.

Anyhow, those of you who read my posts before, on Clarithromycin I was having severe blood thinning and then bruised from head to toe ( it was SOOO bad) even my backside had bruises. They were sometimes so close that at a distance it looked like one huge bruise. Form IGenex I had 2 bands+ and IND on 2. Doc says no doubt about Lyme, but I also have high EBV levels and am currently in a flare up.

Now I have been on the doxy (low dose) for only 2 weeks and it has ramped up my anxiety/rapid thinking severely. I had almost had myself weened off my Xanax and I was having such negative thoughts that I was scared last night. That is very out of character. (p.s. I never would just share this with anyone) it gives me a sick feeling just writing it.

I feel almost doomed. Hard to explain. Almost like I know my fate. I was thinking that I needed to make videos of me reading stories for my babies to watch if I pass away.....

I wish I could explain. This morning has not been any better. I wish more ppl would respond to my posts. I would really like input.

I think the darn weather going from 50s to 20-30s again is really upsetting too. Dont know...I am getting sick of this roller coaster ride.

I know for me 200 mg. did not make me herx one bit. I would only herx on 300 or 400 mg. so 200 really does nothing except to maybe keep the Lyme in check when the goal is to kill and put you into remission or possibly cure.

The problem with 400 mg. for me is it's pretty rough to take. I had to stop recently because of the intense nausea. Waiting to hear from the doc to come up with an alternative. Minocycline is in the same class and has better penetration of the CNS but could have even more side-effects like dizziness so not sure if that's s good alternative. Wish I had answers right now.

Thanks toddpaul- I have very bad nauseous spells just on the 200mg. Not fun! I have seen others write about Minocycline. I am curious! Of course I don't need to get any more dizzy spells!

Maybe my doc plans to ramp up my dose. I am very susceptible to small amounts of medicine. Always have been!

Hi Momof2,

I am new here, and I truly sympathize with you.  Keep the fight, dont give up!  I'm sure you have lots of living to do.  I am about to go on my third week of Doxy also.  I dont feel like its really done anything but gotten a little worse.  Some say here that it is a Herxing reaction.  Going onto my 3rd week I am not so bad during the day like I was the first two weeks.  Still in a brain fog.  I was scared and super nervous the first two weeks.  Im not a doctor but maybe what you are experiencing is the absence of Xanax?

I have worked up to 400 mg of Doxy. Also take Plaquenil and Clarithromycin. I was nauseous as heck at first, then I started weeding out different vitamins and supplements (co-q10, NT Factor, Lipoic acid, marine omega, vitamin, b, b complex, c) to see if one of those were adding to my nausea. I eventually figured out that I could take everything EXCEPT a multi vitamin. Every time I tried to work a multi vit. back into my routine, instant nausea. As long as I stay away from that, I am o.k.....Mom, hang in there...It will get better, just have to grit your teeth and keep moving forward. From what I have seen, with Lymes, persistance and patience most always wins out in the end.

200 is too low. It is bacteriostatic but not bacterialcidal. Have you read Dr. Burrascano's guide?

www.lymenet.org/BurrGuide200810.pdf Also, Lyme is great at creating panic and neuroimbalance. So, that fate that you are feeling is BULLcrap and from the lyme. Dont believe it. Keep fighting. Your babies will help you be strong enough. You read them those stories and put that out of your mind. That is the lyme and the coinfections speaking.

I'm on 400 mg day. I actually prefer minocycline. It's easier side effect wise, but my Llmd prefers doxy. Also taking flagyl, clarith, rifampin and cefdinir.

Pathogen killer is right on!! We ALL get those feelings at some point or other. For me, it can last days or hours. Thanks to the people on this forum, I have learned to deal with all that craziness and just remind myself it's the disease talking! It can get pretty low sometimes. But it WILL pass! Keep yourself busy and try to distract yourself as best as possible. When I'm really low, I watch stand-up comedians on Hulu! They are fee and it gets me out of my head for a bit. Give it a try. Stay away from all things negative because it only perpetuates the anxiety. Negative people, negative stories, negative situations--avoid like the plague!!
You will be OK. You have 2 very important reasons to keep up the fight!

BTW--as other posters mentioned: that dose of doxy is too low. it's not replicating, but it's not dying either. You need to add an abx. or increase that dose. I found doxy really tough. but I take rifampin, I've taken Plaquenil, and had no problems. So go figure.

I, too, started on doxy at 200mg a day and then went up to 400 mg daily.  I found that eating before taking this med helped a bit to alleviate the nauseousness.  My doctor knew about my history of being sensitive to many types of meds so he started me off slowly.  I have been on other antibiotics and am tolerating them well, so far.  I, too, was scared to death of taking antibiotics but knew I had to give them a chance.

As far as the Xanax.....I did a  rather fast taper getting off this benzo (from 1 mg to zero took me 6 weeks).  I took it for only 4 months due to a toxic cns reaction to Levaquin.  This drug is no laughing matter and can cause mega symptoms very similar to Lyme's disease.  So you may be dealing with a double whammy and it will be difficult to distinguish what is causing what.  Holding the Xanax can also cause tolerance where symptoms will be become worse and the only way to alleviate the withdrawal is to either up the dose (which I do not recommend) or wean off.  Where are you now with the Xanax?

Hang on and continue to persevere.  I totally understand the feeling of doom you described and I am sure others here on this forum are/have had those same feelings.  I am here telling you that it will get better.

Hi mumof2withLyme

I am on 300mg of Doxy and can tolerate that very well. I have had good results such as less joint aches, vision issues and aches. I am supposed to go up to 400mg but get very nauseous on this dose.
