The thing that comes to mind with naturopaths is that a majority of them looks at the source of the problem as completely body disfunction, so they initially treat to detox and support various organs of the body and this is a very good philosophy to some degree. They also tend to ignore the nature of the pathogens to some extent and think that a healthy body won't allow the pathogens to thrive there.
In lyme disease there is a flaw with this perception because these pathogens have evolved since their traditional teachings were developed. The pathogens have been actively effected by genetic engineering and DNA sharing which allows them to have newly established defense mechanisms. These stealth pathogens use intracellular abilities, DNA fragmentation and other strategies that evade immune response. The Naturopaths, generally speaking, haven't evolved in their thinking to keep up with the capabilities of the new pathogens.
I think a good rule of thumb is to say that Naturopaths are about as competent as MD's in their own field for understanding and treating Lyme, so 5% if your lucky. Don't assume just because it's a naturopath that you will get comprehensive help.
I think that isn't a good rule of thumb at all ;-)
I'm the Lyme Literate Naturopath from Montreal Deja is talking about
and I am pretty darn competent when it comes to Lyme amongst many other conditions.
Now having said that, not all ND's are Lyme Literate and though it's much better to hire a Lyme Literate ND, all ND's are trained to work on balancing out mind/body.
Naturopaths do not name illnesses, nor does our body. The body is not concerned if we name an illness, Lyme, Cancer, MS etc...only humans give them names. All the body knows is it's in peril, being attacked and it works hard at balancing it out to fight an invader.
MD"s most often treat symptoms (since there are few cures for illness) and ND"s treat the person as a whole to give the body the ammo to fight said "illness".
Abx do cure Lyme when caught right away, but abx still knock the body way out of whack so there still needs to be detoxing and balancing from there.
As for detoxing.....sick or not, it's always a good idea to detox a few time a year. Our environment and food are not clean. Stress is high so our emunctories more often than not, are overloaded with toxins.
