It is complex, as there are about
30 genes (SNP's) that govern how well our methylation cycle is working.
The first step would be to get tested. Dr. Yasko's test has the most comprehensive list of SNP's, but some other tests also cover some of the methylation SNP's (esp. 23andme.com). I have no financial connection with any of these tests, doctors, or websites I'm listing here.www.holisticheal.com/health-tests/nutrigenomic-testing
- yes, it's expensive...but many believe it is well worth it.
The protocol for nutritional compensation for the methylation cycle genomic variants depends on which variants you have, thus the importance of the comprehensive test.
Why do we care about
methylation? Because we cannot detox without glutathione, which is produced as a result of the methylation cycle's function. When methylation is broken, we can't make glutathione, and then we cannot detox from Lyme die-off or other toxic exposures (including mold toxins, heavy metals, etc.).
If one starts a methylation protocol too quickly (too large a dose of the supplements, or too many at once, or supplements for variants without support for other variants in place first), crashing is exactly what can happen.
I would strongly encourage you to try to read at least Dr. Yasko's Chapter 6 in her book, "Pathways to Recovery." She does a very good job of explaining all of this stuff...
So my guess is either you started with too much 5mthf (thus, mobilized too many toxins all at once and overwhelmed your body's detox pathways further downstream from the methylation cycle), or you have other variant methylation genes that need support (or both).
And also we need to be aware that Lyme/coinfections can also interfere with methylation, even if one does not have variant genes.
So support through the use of a basic multivitamin & multimineral supplement and/or adequate food sources of nutrition (which requires optimum diet & digestive function...which is often not the case in those with chronic stealth infections such as Lyme) is important for us.
I hope this helps...take care,
