Psilociraptor, I feel that's a very legitimate question - no worries!!
Based on my own experience, I can only suspect permanent damage and that's to the nerves in the gut - but I know that nerves can take up to 7 years to regenerate, so I can't be sure. I had healed every other symptom and had been without them for 2 full years, but my gut remained an issue. All other symptoms were gone though....then the unthinkable happened.
I was under a TON of stress - my FIL was diagnosed as in the end stages of Alzheimers and was about
to be moved into a nursing home - his worst fear. I was healed, and hubby was stable again after being disabled, so I talked him into bringing his father to live with us. We didn't quite realize what this was to entail, but we were committed - and I would do it all over again for his Dad - but the stress levels were crazy high during the short time (3 months) that his father had left. My mother had a fight during this time with my brother, and before the funeral for my FIL was even over with, she was on the road moving over here with us. Did I say there was a bit of stress??? LOL!
Within a year of my mom moving over, my adrenals crashed, taking my thyroid with it. I went without treatment (couldn't find a doctor) for just over a year, and by that time, my adrenals were so poor, that the doc I finally got in to see told me that I was one step from having developed Addison's, by her experience. I was in treatment for my adrenals and thyroid, but one day - while in town grocery shopping!!!! Ugh! - I picked up a tick that chose to have it's next meal - on me. Within 3 months, I had full blown symptoms of Lyme all over again, and entered back into treatments yet again.
I still have yet to recover from those adrenal and thyroid issues - and I'm still battling what I believe is Bart and likely Babs, but might have successfully treated Lyme yet again. Fingers crossed.
Right now, I'm hedging my bets on recovering from Lyme a second time, because I'm under a ton of stress yet again, with hubby having just had knee replacement surgery and it ramping up all of his other conditions due to the stress of the surgery. Praying that I haven't relapsed and I'm just overwhelmed with Bart and adrenal and thyroid symptoms - but only time will tell.
