I think she should have, but she may not have an understanding of how important they are to our overall health, sick or not. You could add some kefir or yogurt (make sure it has live cultures) or Kombucha. Fermented vegetables are a good source too, as long as they aren't pasteurized. Maybe you can educate your doctor. :) Good luck.
