awww lymerunner I'm so sorry that you aren't feeling good. I just started new meds and am in the same boat as you. I haven't had any experience with Augmentin though.

I'm interested to see what others have to say, because my mother was just started on it pending Western Blot results

There are two roads you can go down when in your situation. You can attempt to decrease the dosage by calling your physician and getting him to change strengths. Augmentin comes in a 250mg, 500mg, or 875mg. It's available in a few other strengths in suspension form, but they wouldn't be cost affective to use. I wouldn't recommend splitting tablets.

Another route would be to attempt to clear your elimination pathways (which are obviously blocked or partially blocked.) Increase water intake, decrease any foods that aren't whole foods, eat plenty of raw vegetables, take a probiotic, and implement Mg soaks and other toxin removal protocols like

P-5-P
Actifolate
Methyl-cobalamin
N-Acetyl Cysteine

Georgia Hunter, do you not think splitting the augmentin in half is not a good idea because of its chemical makeup? I didnt think about that

I have been taking Augmentin for what the doctor thinks is Lyme (I had a tick bite over 3 years ago, no rash, no antibiotics at the time -- then followed three years of hell, complete with several useless wrong diagnoses).

I first got a prescription for Augmentin for a secondary Strep infection. I felt much, much better. Then I took it three short courses, all for recurring strep. Each time I felt good while on it and then my symptoms would always come back when I stopped. I get extreme nerve headaches down one side of my face, numbness in my face, brain fog and fatigue to the point of inability to work in my field (IT) full-time (I went back to work for four months FT after my first three courses of Augmentin).

So then I saw a Lyme specialist who decided I should try the Aug. for 4 weeks to see what happens. I was feeling better for the first half of this. But during the second half of the course (which I am almost done with) I started to feel worse.

The headaches sort of came back, intermittent very loud ear ringing and extreme fatigue. At times, I feel too tired to drive 15 minutes to the grocery store.

I am now also experiencing very bad sweating at night - I never had anything like this in two years. I am burning hot. It may be screwing with my hormones. Or maybe I am improving in some backwards way -- and this is normal peri-menopuase asserting itself. Before I took the antibiotics, I was usually freezing.

I am finishing the Aug. just to see how it goes but it is making me unable to exercise. I cannot really function in a constructive manner for several days a week due to the horrible fog and tiredness. The bad symptoms are almost every other day now. This is a roller coaster ride... I used to be a daily newspaper reporter, so I was very quick. It is hard to get used to this illness.

Does anyone know if this might be a herx reaction to the Augmentin? I need to learn more about what this entails.

Have you been tested or screened for other infections (babesia)?

Or bartonella?

Keep in mind, testing is useless for most of us. I would treat all 3 - Lyme, bartonella, babesia.

That's what Dr. J. does. I know some LLMD's don't.

My LLND didn't/wouldn't treat babesia for me...and i stalled out with treatment after over 2 years of treating only lyme and bart.

I think the LL Dr.'s don't want to treat with anti-malarials unless they know for sure you have Babesia...but leaving a confection to run rampant is worse IMO.
