That's exactly what a therapist once told me. "Love is not enough." I broke up with my ex in 2008, not too long after a complete thyroidectomy and my father's death. I wrote a funny "Dear Friends" letter that Christmas, entitled, "The Year of my Voodoo Curse." I didn't send it though!
I think staying with my ex would have made me sicker in the long run (and in the short, for that matter). My therapist convinced him to come with me to my first LLMD visit (NC to NY), and he insisted we drive, and not fly, plus I had to do at least part of the driving. Then he yelled at me part of the way up, and all the way back, and he made a tourist trip out of it, meaning he was dragging me around to see Gettysburg, and things of the sort. When we got back, I was so burned out, I knew there was no way we would ever make things work again.
Now, I'm thinking of selling my house, bc I believe it's making me sick. Mold, plus way, way, way too much maintenance, and a very steep terraced yard. For one thing, I need the money, then I need a smaller space with a flat yard, and I need to get rid of tons of junk.
It's super hard to be on your own without family to help; and that's a fact. So if he's helping or being supportive, that's good. But if your life would be better off (including health wise) without him, that's another thing entirely.
I'd suggest loving friends, people with chronic illness, and/or church or something of the sort. Ok, I'm not walking the talk yet, but at least I can suggest it.
If you need to email me (as I am in that "single and alone" position), let me know.
It's important for you to be true to yourself, and to live authentically, as long as it's not at a very, very serious cost.
