I do need to say that I have recently revised my beliefs on this subject. If anyone reads previous posts of mine, they will eventually run across posts where I said something about
not thinking that diet is all that critical - I have definitely changed my mind on this!! Now I can't hardly believe that I didn't make this connection sooner!!
On the point that Mister Mike has made about
going gluten-free: I have also read that. My new doc (non-LL although she does understand a lot!!), has told me that because corn, wheat and soy are usually genetically modified now, most people won't be able to tolerate them like years ago. She specifically said when I was young - about
40 years ago!!! LOL!
Honestly, I don't think that I could have done this diet while I was healing from Lyme and Bart (I treated them at the same time), at least not until I was most of the way through my treatments. I was just barely functioning back then. The amount of time and energy it takes to prepare all you own food from scratch and no cheaters is no easy feat! Not even now with Addison's and being hypothyroid, at least not for me - I'm not a good cook and I have to have recipes for everything. Trying to avoid all of those foods all at the same time is hard!
The doc that I now see is a traditionally educated MD that believes natural medicine is really the only way to go, but will use pharmaceuticals for extreme cases, but only as long as needed - then she switches them to natural meds.
The elimination diet that she put me on was very extensive. I had to avoid potatoes, sweet potatoes, MSG & all it's derivatives (there's lots!!!), dairy, wheat, chocolate/cocoa, corn, eggs, citrus fruits, coffee/tea/alcohol/soda, peanuts/peanut butter, shellfish, soy, tap water (fortunately I have a well) and "food additives". Food additives meant artificial colors/flavors, preservatives, texturizing agents, artificial sweeteners, and so on.
For food testing, I have to keep a food diary (very important!!) and I have to eat/drink the food 3 times a day for 3 days, then that's all I can have until the "food trials" are completed- which I can't hardly wait for!!!
I have found the best way to summarize what I am doing is that if it is pre-prepared in any way, has preservatives or anything other than the food itself - I can't have it!! LOL! It's not quite that bad, I have found that I can eat almond butter that I can buy, and some rye 'crackers' and I've found a Gluten free "baking mix' that I can use to make so-called biscuits, although they are nothing like say Bisquick biscuits or the canned variety (just for comparison). I can't have any salad dressings that are pre-made, as they all use soybean oil, and the list goes on.
L-arganine should be avoided any way. It will deplete the levels of L-lysine in the body, which is what keeps the Herpes viruses (and EBV) under control. I mistakenly started taking L-arganine 1 1/2 yrs ago and realized that after 1 or 2 months that I had reactivated my EBV after reading an article about
it. I took L-lysine for several months and got it back under control though.
