I am currently taking bugner protocol for Lyme babesia and bartonella and I am curious if astragalus would be OK for me to take.

I see that Stephen buhner says not to take it with chronic Lyme.

I have had Lyme symptoms for only 3 months and 1 week. Is this chronic? Or would he consider me an acute stage. I have been actively treating my disease since my first symptom and I have heard such good reviews of this herb but I am afraid to take it due to his warning.

Any suggestions? Any reviews of this herb are helpful also.

Thanks everybody and happy November! :)
I thru hiked the Appalachian trail and believe I got a tick bite transmission of lyme, bartonella, and possibly babesia in June 2014

Symptoms started July 27, 2014

Treatment started July 29, 2014 doxycyline only

Saw LLMD Sept 07, 2014

Diagnosed with Lyme and bartonella clinically currently treating.

Astragalus increases the parts of the immune system that attack Lyme disease, in chronic Lyme this can lead to a very bad herx is why he cautions against the use in chronic Lyme.

Do you have the chronic Lyme symptoms or just a few symptoms?

You can always try a very small dose and see how you handle it.

I'm taking it, although I held my breath at first. I wasn't 100% sure that I wasn't dealing with a relapse when I realized that I was dealing with Lyme again, but I knew that even if it had been a new infection, I was already 2 or 3 months into it. I started off slowly and was sooo very grateful when I didn't herx horridly from it!!

I also read that for chronic lyme, the astragalus can stimulate parts of the immune system that cause autoimmunity...and that's one reason why Buhner says not to use it in chronic cases.

It was in a Woodland Essence adrenal support supplement, but I stopped taking it.
Symptoms started Sept, 2013 (maybe sooner?)
Buhner's protocol May 15/14 to July24/14

Amox 1000mg x3 + Probencid started Aug. 29/14; added biaxin 500X2 Sept. 26/14
Probiotics, Gaba, Psy-stabil, milk thistle, VitC, B12,D, Cal/Mag, extra mag, Ashwaganda, Curcumin

Unfortunately, no, not really. I was treated by a Master Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner/Master Western Herbalist and although she took my suggestions for treating Lyme and Bartonella, she devised her own treatment for Babesia. I have my records, but she was a typical doc - not very good notes and trying to decipher the hand writing is nearly impossible!! LOL!

I did my best to decipher her notes though and the notes about treating Babesia can be found in the thread that I've included a link to in my signature line, but here it is again. As you can see, I'm at a loss for what all I took to get past this infection. It took just as long in treatment for me to beat Babesia as it did for me to beat Lyme disease - 1 full year - only there were a lot more changes of herbs and other healing modalities for Babesia! :

Okay, okay, I give!! LOL! I've really been hesitating as there were so many danged herbs that I used during the time that I was being treated for Babesia, but now that I've sat down and gone through it all much more carefully, I can see that most of them were used for symptom relief.

shocked Holey Moley! My doc's handwriting leaves a lot to be desired!! Wow!

From what I can make out, the main herb used to treat my Babesia was Artemesia.
Zang agrees with this:

and although Buhner used to, he's recently decided that Sida Cuta works better for more people, but Buhner does admit that Artemesia will work for some people:

For those that are interested, I also used ear tacks a lot during this period and they were applied most often to the "Shen men" point, Autonomic point, and Zero point. And I actually did feel better when using these as I was going through treatment.

My doc had me use a combination of herbs that she mixed to increase my micro-circulation called:
Dang Gui Si Ni San (no, not a misspelling, just hard to find info on)

And a variety of herbs for treating symptoms.

Edited to add - I also used green tea during my treatment of Babesia.

We (IND lyme, positive bartonella, clinical babesia) are able to use astragalus at low dosage (500 mg mon, wed, fri). Anything more than that produces symptoms of severe inflammation.

As alternatives, every other day we use an extract of American ginseng (ColdFX) and use cordyceps daily.

I used astragalus as recommended by my herbalist. Don't think it hurt but I didn't see much benefit from it either.

This is in reference to an old post but I ordered Astragalus and I think I meant to order Ashwagandha. I have used both previously but I think the Ashwagandha benefited me the most. I am taking Chronic Tonic and am feeling healing taking place, just trying to gain back some of the health I had two years ago prior to breast cancer and 33 radiation treatments 15 months ago which brought back Mr. Lyme full force. So I may need to get the Ashwagandha, would it be better to delay the Astragalus for now and just take the Ashwagandha?
