Hi all,

Just reading up about some herbals. I'm on Buhner's website and on the protocols page, I can't seem to find anything about Andrographis. I thought that was a staple in his protocol, yet it only mentions Cat's Claw, Knotweed, and Eleuthero under the Lyme core protocol.

I'm a bit confused by this, as I am reading excerpts from his book that I've found on the internet which clearly state that he is a huge fan of Andrographis and it is one of his favorite herbs.

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

What is the recommended dosage of Andrographis tincture per Buhner's Healing Lyme book?

I used andrographis in July when my symptoms were at their worst yet I had no idea I had Lyme.

I hadn't slept in weeks, and melatonin (which had always helped) started to make me queasy, increased dizziness/malaise. The first time I tried andrographis, I slept like a baby. Continued feeling good for 24 hours then crashed HARD. Developed tinnitus that has never gone away.

I think andro made me herx big time.

I used it and I had no problems with it. Buhner claims some people developed a rash (I think hives) after taking it. I didn't have this problem. It is part of Dr. Klinghardt's protocol, so I added it to the mix. I think I take well over 10 tinctures now. I just do one dropperfull of each except Howthorn (because it makes me sleepy) and Red Root, of which I take up to 8 drops. I only do it once a day because I haven't noticed any difference taking it once or 3 times per day in smaller amounts. It's an antiviral as well, so I figure I will take it at least during the winter. So far no interactions and no problems with this herb.

I started andrographis 3 weeks ago and have seen my greatest improvements since adding it!
I have actually exercised this week!
I never thought that would happen again.

The Andrographis has had the greatest impact on my healing of any medication/herb/supplement in the last 2 1/2 years of tx.

It is definitely the key to my turning point :)

I can't locate my Healing Lyme book & don't remember the recommended tincture dosage.

Can someone please let me know?

Toronto- that is a great news. I herxed hard when I started andro 3 weeks ago, so I went down to a 1/4 dropper and added a little more in each week. I am up to 3/4 dropper now.
I feel so strong & have so much energy! I will stay on this one for a while, possibly forever.
I think it is killing off a lot of latent infections in my body that have slowly been dragging me down over the years, then when I got lyme, theses infections really took hold and haven't let go.
I have some bumps on my neck area since I started andro, not itchy or allergic reaction, but are similar to chicken pox.
It makes me believe junk it getting shoved out of my body through my skin.

1% of the population develops a skin allergic reaction to Andrographis that can be very severe. This is why Buhner no longer recommends it, he got lots of complaints from people.

buhnerhealinglyme.com/herbs/andrographis-severe-skin-reaction/

HOWEVER, Andrographis is a very potent herb against Lyme disease, so i don't see a reason why people cannot test if they have a rash with a low dose and decide if they can use it or not.

I am currently getting herbal treatment from Germany and they use a herbal cocktail with Andrographis as main ingredient, along with Artemisinin, Grapefruit seed extract, Resveratrol (knotweed), Chorella, Allicin and many many others. They seem less concerned with the allergic reaction.

Well, even though I donated to help fund publishing of Buhner's new Lyme book, it seems those who pre-ordered on Amazon already have it.

And, one person was nice enough to share a few highlights with me which include the recommendation for Andrographis as an anti-spirochetal.

Per Buhner:

"This herb is known as "King of Bitters" or, sometimes "Bile of the Earth," I would not recommend taking it as a tincture (unless you are really, really tough: I'm not, I cried). I would recommend capsules (rather than tablets, they taste just as vile). There is a decent brand, as an example, that offers 1,200 mgs (in a 2-capsule dose) of the herb,. Most formulations are standardized for 10 percent andrographolides. I am not sure this is absolutely necessary, nevertheless, that's what's out there."

He does go on about the risk of hives so, as with everything, the recommendation is to start low and slow.

All of that said....does anyone have a particular brand they're finding effective?

Well, I have HerbPharm tincture in my cabinet which is in the line up for consumption, but now, having read Buhner's warning on taste, I may just go with capsules.

Personal preference, I like Gaia brand but have not used Andro in their brand.

BadMonkey has an organic one in caps and it says it is 10%.

Being how I will go low and slow, I may just get the powder and cap my own. BadMonkey does have the organic powder.

Just suggestions and I hope someone else comes around with something they have tried.

I was using Progena brand Andrographis capsules (200mg per cap) and had worked my way up to taking 3/day... I did not have any allergic reactions to it, but most certainly did herx when I first started it and every time I increased the dose.
