The only other anti-microbial in the Cowden program is Coumanda....all of the other tinctures are detox and support preparations.
How *does* one identify a relapse?
The Cowden protocol appears to have many different anti-microbial herbal tinctures including: barberry, cumanda, enula, houttuynia, mora, noni, quina, takuna, samento, banderol.
Houttuynia is specific for bartonella, quina for protozoan infections. I'm not sure about
I have always identified a herx as a relatively immediate negative symptom response to the addition or increased dosage of a compound. A decrease or discontinuation of dosage will result in resolution of the symptoms.
With relapse, discontinuation or decrease in dosage will result in no resolution and symptoms will continue to intensify.
Just a note on our daughter's response to the BW A-L (lyme) and A-Bart (bart) formulas:
Although testing IND for lyme (ie it was there but her immune system was only responding weakly) she had no response, good or bad to A-L.
A-Bart produced immediate herxes (within 20 minutes) of bartonella symptoms (shin/forarm pain, headache, motor ticcing, raging, fatigue) with every increase of 1 drop. It was very difficult for her to make it to 25 drops 3x daily, but we did. It took months.
After 6 months at this dosage (along with multiple abx) she was still experiencing bartonella symptoms, although only during exertion. Symptoms were no longer constant.
I discontinued A-Bart when she weaned from abx to start Buhner because I didn't want any confounders in the mix. After we had gotten going with the full Buhner bart protocol, I tried reintroducing A-Bart at 3 drops and again got an immediate bartonella herx.
So A-Bart (high doses for 6 months) and multiple abx (for 2 years) were not enough to put bart into remission.
We found out later that she also had an asymptomatic babesia infection and addressing this as well has brought her healing. Perhaps if I had added A-Babs we might have gotten somewhere with the BW formulas.
13 yo daughter:
2010 - Dx ADHD, Tourette’s, Aspergers, motor delay, PANS/PANDAS
June 2011 - Igenex PCR positive bartonella, IND lyme. CD57 18. Positive ANA (speckled type), heterozygous A1298C MTHFR. Multiple Abx, herbals/homeopathics
April 2013 - ANA titers negative. Weaned abx. Start Buhner bartonella protocol, methylation/detox protocols, organic PerfectHealthDiet gf/cf/sf. Minimize EMF exposure
Nov 2013 – Clinical babesia diagnosis. Start Buhner babesia protocol
Sept 2014 – Symptoms 99% resolved
