Hello All,

As some of you know, I recently made a post about my slow but steady recovery on antibiotics since starting rifampin/doxy combo 7 months ago. It was until the 3 month mark that I started noticing improvement. The combo has gotten rid of my brain fog along with many other symptoms that I once had.

2 months ago the doctor replaced my doxy with minocycline (1 pill a day 100mg, never taken before). The first month I experienced intense neck stiffness along with other herx symptoms. The following 2-3 weeks after that was perhaps the best I have felt since having lyme (95%)

However, 2.5 weeks ago I began having slight anxiety, ocd thoughts, intrusive thoughts that come and go. Not nearly as severe as when the disease began 2 years ago, but they are definitely there. OCD thoughts, anxiety were my first symptoms ever with lyme and they always disappeared while on antibiotics. I have not had these symptoms in close to a year. Is this a herx? The minocycline with greater penetration getting into my brain where the doxy couldn't touch? I am not having any brain fog or other herx symptoms besides weight loss, tingling sinuses and lower energy. I am scared that the disease is progressing or the lyme has become resistant to the antibiotics? I feel like this is the true turning point in my battle, it can either be a herx getting rid of the deep bacteria in my brain or the bacteria are starting to become resistant. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

F-lyme - I'm on very long term abx and my experience is that old symptoms, some long forgotten, are revisited like this. Yes, that includes anxiety, depression, OCD. From what you describe, it sounds like herx to me. That's how it's been for me. The minocycline does have greater brain penetration, so it makes sense that it could result in more brain symptoms from die-off etc.

I would try to increase detoxing. I find oil pulling seems to help ease these symptoms, but any detoxing helps. If it gets too unbearable, I reduce abx dose for a few days.

Celeste thank you for the reply. It is very strange because I never displayed these symptoms when on antibiotics, this is the first time ever and I have been on antibitics for a year and a half. I guess this is why it is frightening me. It comes and goes, lasting only minutes. Last week it lasted longer an hour or 2 at times and now it has definintley gotten weaker. This herx? has been on going for 2.5 weeks now, the first week was stronger (though not nearly what It was 2 years ago), and this week it has gotten progressively weaker.

I dont have any brain fog or the usual tired/out of it feeling that I get with the herx days. If the disease was progressing these symptoms would be getting worse right (anxiety, brain fog, other symptoms returning)? I have been detoxing epsom salt baths now. Only time will tell what this is.

I agree with Celeste - Mino has better brain penetration, and that you are likely herxing. I would also agree that you should raise the amount of detoxing that you do to help out your body in getting rid of those toxins. It will likely help with the symptoms too.

I appreciate your responses guys. This has been going on for 3 weeks now and I'm beginning to doubt if it is a herx. 3 weeks is long no? Ive been on mino for 2 months. This all began a month and a week into the mino cycle. If anyone could chime in on their minocycline experience it would be much appericiated. Also best way to detox brain ?

I herxed on Mino the whole time I was on it - 12 months. It was horrible, but back then it was not realized how important detoxing was to our healing, so I wasn't doing all I could to detox.

Even on herbs, after week 3, I herx for 3 weeks.

My understanding is that most people feel like pinella is the best for brain detox.

Lila,
I've had the best help from avena sativa (oats in the 'milky stage' - NOT oat straw), or Melissa Supreme for anxiety - but they don't work for everyone.

Most often, herbs and abx can be safely used at the same time, but you need to have a really good herbalist that you can at least consult with in order to be sure. Interactions do happen, so we need to be really careful and remember that herbs do have medicinal actions as well.

Then, you have to work on your fears. There's no way around this. If you are actively afraid daily that you will remain ill forever, you will struggle even more to heal. The stress alone will impact your ability to heal.

You may wish to start talking about this to other Lyme patients, or to find a Lyme Literate counselor of some type in order to work through this.
