"Wilhelm (“Willy”) Burgdorfer was born on June 27, 1925 and raised and educated in Basel, Switzerland. In 1951, he received a doctorate in zoology and bacteriology at the University of Basel. His thesis, titled “Analyze des Infektionsverlaufes bei Ornithodoros moubata (Murray) und der natürlichen Uebertragung von der Spirochaeta duttoni,” clarified the relationship of the African relapsing-fever spirochete, Borrelia duttonii, to its soft-tick vector, Ornithodoros moubata."
"Willy was a medical entomologist extraordinaire. He elucidated the relationships of diverse microbial disease agents to their arthropod vectors, particularly ticks, and to their vertebrate hosts (Lane, 2000). Most of his research targeted rickettsial and other bacterial agents as well as viruses impacting public health, such as those causing Lyme borreliosis (LB, in the US called Lyme disease), relapsing fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia and Colorado tick fever. His research revealed both intrinsic and extrinsic factors responsible for maintaining and disseminating such pathogens among ticks, wildlife and people. These included the novel findings that non-virulent spotted fever group rickettsiae can inhibit infection of the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni) by virulent Rickettsia rickettsii, and that Colorado tick fever virus can persist for prolonged periods in the erythrocytes of its mammalian hosts."www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877959X15001521
