I'm always a bit concerned when people with Lyme say they cannot tolerate heat bc of the herx. I had been using the sauna for 30min-1 hr for 10 years a couple times a week before I got the Lyme diagnosis. I simply cannot imagine herxing from the sauna or not being able to tolerate heat. What does this mean regarding bacterial loads?
At this point I've been treating for 4 years and still am not sure if I will actually be able to recover. I think if heat makes you herx it would be better use this effect and keep increasing it rather than try to avoid the herx. I just am concerned how long recovery would take otherwise.
I can't disagree with the suggestion of capitalizing on herxing. But you have to remember that every person is different and there is a whole host of different things going on in our bodies. And there is a time and place to utilize herxing in this way.
In theory and in reality, as we progress through treatment, the lower our pathogen load can impact a simpler treatment and therefore a less intensive corresponding detox program. And eventually, we get back into regular, daily-life detoxing like hot showers and sauna. For me, can't speak for anyone else, but for me I still have a ways to go before my body is ready for heat as part of my detox protocol.
I used to take hot showers regularly (before I knew I had yeast/fungal issues and lyme & co). And I would faint, often. Of course, MDs attributed it to everything else under the sun so I kept taking the hot showers. I once jumped into a hot tub and nearly ended up in the ER. I also suffer a bit from PTSDS from all this crazy herxing I used to experience before I knew what was going on. I understand now but can't get past the trauma sometimes. So I don't do saunas anymore.
But more specifically, it's July in southern CA. I don't have A/C. So, I sweat miserably all day long, every day, during and after showers, while I'm making dinner, when I go for a bike ride, when I wake up in the middle of the night... Who needs a sauna????? ;)
