On uncaria rhynchophylla: I don't actually have Buhner's book (yet) but he seems to be cautious about all of the herbs he recommends. (Your mileage may vary!) Always good to start slowly and observe your response.
I have a Master's degree in Traditonal CHinese Medicine and some familiarity with the herb. It's always best to see a trained TCM doctor if it's possible. These sorts of herbs are almost never prescribed as single herbs, and a good herbalist can fine tune the formula to compensate for unwanted effects. If it's not possible, proceed slowly and cautiously with ALL herbs.
We always recommend that people start with a drop or two...and one herb at a time...and very slowly titrate up. Then proceed with the next herb, etc.
Buhner has a list of Herbalists that know his protocols well. Some (maybe all?) do phone consults.
So for those who don't want to do the herbs on their own, there's always that option.
