We see a holistic dentist the past few years. The kid's teeth are fine - with the occasional cavity (mostly in baby teeth that have fallen out). Youngest had a bad cavity and needed to be pulled (it was a baby tooth). There are NO metal fillings in any of us. No bridges, no root canals, no metal fillings, no crowns, etc.
Our holistic dentist is in line with my personal beliefs -- no fluoride, digital x-rays (but willing to work with me on spacing them out if/when I have concerns), conservative attitude/appraoch, etc.
However, the holistic dentist is recommending sealant (which I guess is "better" than conventional sealants - but I forget the details on why) on my kid's molar teeth. They do remove a tiny bit of healthy tooth (which I don't like this idea), but this would be less than a future cavity down the road that we'd be trying to prevent. However, she is definitely willing to work with me and respects my concerns. Because of such, she does a wait and see approach. She evaluates based on how groovy the teeth are and if any existing staining. For example, one kid has really groovy teeth but no evidence of staining, so she is totally find waiting and watching. However, for another kid, he has two teeth that are really groovy plus a little bit stained, so she recommends doing just those two teeth only.
I really don't like the idea of doing anything permanent like this. There are too much situations where we think something is "safe" now - but only to find out later that it's not safe at all. For example, our previous pediatric dental clinic was still telling people that metal fillings are completely safe (we no longer go there now). *sigh*
But I also don't like the idea of the kids having cavities in these teeth they will have a lifetime too.
So, I'm torn. Any opinions on sealants for molars? Risks?
Kid#1: Extremely sick for several years, very difficult to treat, improved now but not fully well
Kid#2: Very sick now despite being treated for years, bad year
Kid#3: Was doing very well (ironically had the least and shortest treatment) - but has relapsed
Me: Adv Labs positive 2016 (suspected I passed to my kids) - not as sick as others, mostly battling fatigue, kidney, heart, and yeast issues
