What's the common wisdom out there pulsing Babesia meds like Malarone, Mepron, etc? I know Artemisian pulses but don't think I've heard of folks pulsing the others. Thx.

You probably do know this - Dr. Jemsek's patients pulse the Babesia meds.

Back in the day (eg several years ago), Kid#1 did not pulse mepron. I have a relative who just did babesia treatment, and he did not pulse either.

However, if we were doing that route, I'd look into pulsing them and see if it makes sense.
Kid#1: Extremely sick for several years, very difficult to treat, but much better lately!
Kid#2: Very sick now despite being treated for years, very bad year
Kid#3: Doing great, minor relapse, but great again (ironically had least and shortest treatment)!
Me: Adv Labs positive 2016 (suspected I passed to my kids) - not as sick as others, mostly battling fatigue, kidney, heart, and yeast issues

DS pulsed malarone and artemisinin while pulsing abx so it can be done but I don't know how effective it is or if any research has been done.

thanks everyone. another follow up question do people ever take mepron or malarone with anything but zithromax? i can't see why you wouldn't be able to since there are other broad spectrum abx.

I know someone who sees Dr J and he was pulsing Mepron with mino.

I believe LLMD MR has Mepron paired with doxy, mino, zith, or biaxin as options to treat babs.

girlie i did look up MR and yes he uses those. my LLMD hasn't treated my babesia since january (well except for plaquenil but i wouldn't consider that treating). i am taking bactrim but that's part of bart protocol but is probably hitting babs.

i have 30 days of malarone left over i think i'm going to add that to my pulsing regimen of rifabutin / mino / bactrim. hoping for a herx!

Rikky - you sure you want to take malarone with rifabutin?

What about taking the malarone on T/Thurs - away from the Rif?

Or every other week do malarone. Switch rif and malarone each week?

the reason i was thinking of adding malarone with the regimen is i'm taking minocycline then as well.

i do rif/mino/bactrim Th,F,Sa,Su nothing the other 3 days. Since rifabutin has a half life of 45 hours i don't see how i can stay away from it too well. I could do only malarone Tu,We what do u think?

You're starting to sound like me, rikky1 - should I do this?...or should i do that?

Yup, you could do it Tue, We. But so much for pulsing then, right? You'd only have Monday without any meds...

I am still wanting to try the Mepron...I have one bottle of it...don't know if i'm ready to stop the rifampin yet...at this trial of full dose once daily...

I'm kind of in the same situation as you...

It's taking the antibiotics with breaks - instead of daily.

I hear ya Girlie. I've heard of some LLMD's who have no problem giving Atovaquone with Rifampin so i'm still up in the air. I think i'll take it 2 days this week alone and then decide what to do for next week.

Another less known piece of info Rifampin and Cipro have shown in a lab to inhibit the growth of certain species of Babesia. There's still much we don't know about these pathogens so any research is good!

Following up on this thread - I am currently pulsing Mepron. I am on my second week and I am not feeling the air hunger, night sweats like I did back in 2014.

For those currently or previously having experience with pulsing. How many weeks in before you felt the babs bugs screaming on Mepron?

Thanks,

Peppermint Tea

I took malarone w/omnicef

If I recall, were you going to start dapsone? That hits babs too, or they think it does.

i'm starting dapsone and probably daraprim next I see Dr. J in late Feb.

reading this thread from a year ago its amazing how much I've learned since then. I guess that's good :o)

See - I mentioned Dr. J. I planted the seed.... smilewinkgrin

It seems like yesterday that you were having your first visit at the Jemsek Clinic.

It can be dangerous to stop and start Rifampin drugs -- is that what someone is suggesting? There can be a hypersensitivity syndrome thats possible with any restart.

If one needs to take a Rifampin drug continually to avoid that, would it be counterindicated to do these pulsed babs combos? And what's the best pulsing schedule as it seems like there's a lot of variation or is it just what-one-can-tolerate sorta?

Yes, Dr. J pulses rifampin - and other llmd's also do now.
I pulsed Rifampin for many months.

Babesia protocols can also be pulsed.

i've seen several of Dr. J's pulsed protocols. One of them is M/W/F 2 weeks on and 1 week off.
On the week 2 Flagyl is added on Th and F only.

He will often prescribe Rifampin plus two other antibiotics to take on the M/W/F.

No, it's not "just what one-can-tolerate sorta" - Dr. J. has a method to his protocols.

Dr S's Lyme Solutions book states Mepron 3 weeks On and 1 week OFF, while staying on Zith all the time.
