This is my fourth relapse and I'm trying to do it with herbs this time. I tried a dapsone protocol for four months and just herxed like crazy and couldn't tolerate it. I've been working on getting on buhner herbs for about a month now. I am very sick. about 20%. Am I kidding myself thinking I can get functional again on herbs?

I'm so sorry you're going through this again! How long have you been treating altogether? Are you detoxing regularly?

I'm sure people will be on here who can give you more guidance. Just wanted to lend some support...don't give up! smile

What I have found is that healing from lyme is not just the "medicine." It is a huge combo of things. You have to have a super good diet. You need to do everything to help your immune system. Learn to manage stress with yoga, breathing techniques, or something. You need to be detoxing as if your life depended on it on a DAILY basis and then last of all you need to treat.

Treating without doing all the rest is like putting a cast on an unset broken bone. Sure, it will heal, but not properly and so it will continue to give you problems the rest of your life.

It's usually been based around bartonella treatment like rifampin and I've used ozone and a ton of other modalities. I have not however used herbs as my primary treatment before. Just looking for support and encouragement. I am presently on jk and hh and that had taken me about a month to get on. I will be adding more as I go.

Oh and after you heal..... I have found that you have to balance your life. You cannot overdo anything or you tip the scales and you are back into being a lyme patient.

I can't over exercise, eat, drink, stress or anything. If I do, I will be a relapsed person also.

Sorry you are going through this. It is my biggest fear.

PS I healed with herbs.

PeteZa - have you experienced a setback by over exercising or getting slack with your diet since you've healed? I'm curious - I know others who are very careful and are concerned they will relapse but also many people who aren't and have been fine - no relapses.

Girlie -
I relapse every time I overdo it or get lax w/ diet. But my achilles heel is viral surges, which then allow Lyme & co to surge as well.

DJF2005 -
I think we relapse for many reasons.

- I think sometimes it's because the Rx route can be effective in its antimicrobial purpose but hard on the body because it's not as comprehensive or supportive as herbal antimicrobials.

- And most MDs - even the best LLMDs can overlook the importance of focusing on whole-body health and supporting body systems, particularly with Rx.

- Gut health is overlooked (and since we take nearly everything orally, and our protocol is antimicrobial, we are definitely disrupting the gut microbiome, which can affect immune function and many other body systems). 70% of our immune function is our GI and we know that there is no magic panacea antimicrobial protocol that works without the help and support of our own immune systems.

- And our infection loads and treatment responses are dynamic - most of us need adjustments to our protocols over time to respond to changes. Often, when we make progress on one infection, another infection might become more dominant.

- And since it is VERY difficult to be sure what infections we're dealing with, it's common that we aren't treating everything we should be. Some people need to focus on one infection at a time and can't handle more than that but these infections are opportunistic and can become dominant and confuse the landscape of our treatment.

I think these are some of the reasons why "peeling the onion" is a long, complicated process.

No, I have been very blessed not to.

My local lyme support group has many. It is sad. They all know what they did and how they did it. Overdoing it is always the culprit in our group. Weakened immune system.
