Hi. My LLMD wants me to take the following oral antibiotics for 6-8 weeks:

  • Zithromax (Azithromycin) 500mg - Pulsed on Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
  • Rifampicin 2x 150mg per day - morning and evening - daily ingestion starting in the 2nd week. Is this dose high enough?
  • Artemisia annua as a cyst buster

I'm already suffering from heart palpitations every couple of days.
Is it safe for me to take Azithromycin 500mg ?
My QTc interval was below 400 ms in the short-term electrocardiogram but that doesn't mean that my QTc interval is within the norm in the 24h electrocardiogram.

Does it even make sense to take this combo without adding in the Minocycline? My LLMD doesn't think I'm healthy enough to add the minocycline into the mix just yet as it can cause some ugly side-effects in the head (head pressure and what not) but perhaps that's exactly what I need because I've had these horrible lightning bolt head aches for over a year and I can barely sleep at all.

Should I take Bactrim instead of the Zithromax because of my already existing heart palpitations?
Is it just as effective in treating Lyme and the coinfections? I've got Lyme, Bartonella and a couple of other nasty critters throwing a party inside my body.

Is it better to take these substances intravenously? I need something that penetrates the BBB (blood brain barrier) and achieves high enough concentrations in the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid).
Can oral antibiotics achieve this?

I'm really scared to take the Zithromax after reading the instruction manual. So many side-effects :S

Thanks for your input!

Oh yea and is it safe to take milk thistle seed oil and artichoke to detox the gall bladder and liver while being on Azithromycin and Rifampicin? Or do these antibiotics interfere with the former?
And Vitamin D such as cod liver oil?
What about cilantro, parsley, turmeric, ginger?
Thanks

Sorry to hear this, but I don't know what is safe or not regarding meds. You should trust your doctor at that, but I know it's tempting to search for answers here as well.

I may be able to help you on your first question as I take azithromycin as well. Monday, wednesday and friday. Probably a reason why it's done like this, but don't know why. Just wanted to say that I do it the same way smile

Hi RedLabel. Thanks for your quick answer.
I just swallowed the entire 500mg tablet and a few minutes later I felt a heart palpitation!

My doctor is a good LLMD but he doesn't know about my heart palpitations. He's always in such a hurry and he didn't ask if I had any heart problems.

Are there any other side-effects I should watch out for when taking Zithromax? I know it can cause elevated liver enzymes and it can mess with the heart.

It's been more than 2 hours after taking my first 500mg tablet today and I still feel like crap. Is this normal?

Sorry to hear that.
I do get very upset stomach from it. Especially on empty stomach.

My LLMD has me taking regular heart checks but I'm not sure. I do get heart palps but not related to the azith I think

Hi Insomiaaa,

my few cents.

myself I am taking:

Zytromax 500mg M, D, F
Minocycline, 100 mg 2xday
Rifampin, 300 mg 2xday
Artemisin (plant extract) 400mg 2xday

I am controlling my QTc every three weeks. So far so good. I don't know which are the implications in case of your heart palpitations. So I can not say whether is it safe or not for you. In my case after 8 weeks I had to stop it because of a lowering in my platelets count. Otherwise I tolerated it very well. Actually I tollerated all of them very well.
Now my LLMD wants me to swich to Bactrim, but I am scared or it.

Crossing BBB does nothing to do with IV or oral. It has to do with the lipophilicity of the drug. So, oral is fine with these drugs.

As a support I am taking 1200 mg NAC and milk thristle and Keffir twice a day. This is saving my guts!!

Hope this helps.

My heart palps are part of Babesia. I was taking zithromax and rifampin when I had a major panic attack (now I know was a Babesia flare) and air hunger. I hadn’t been tested for nor considered Babs yet, so we stopped the zithromax to make sure it wasn’t a side effect.
It wasn’t the z-max. It was and is Babesia. I am now taking Mepron, biaxin, Artemisinin, and doxy, and the heart palps have been awful - no z-max
.
It did help to lower my thyroid medication, but it still happens. I think it’s one of the scariest symptoms of TBDs.

It can’t hurt to tell your doctor this. Likely if they do tests they will come back normal. Put it on the doc’s radar, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Keep detoxing and eating well and for me, they subsided greatly with treatment.
Lyme, Babesia, Bartonella. Symptoms began 5/2016, didn't start treatment until 9/2016. Slow but steady recovery.
