I posted here a week or two ago about my loss of taste. I still don't have my sense of taste back but I'm pretty sure I know what caused it, and it wasn't a sinus infection. For one thing, I still have a very acute sense of smell.

I started taking Andrographis three weeks before I lost my taste. My sister (who may have Lyme but at least probably some other chronic infections, judging by her symptoms) started taking Andrographis a few weeks after I did. Earlier this week she lost her sense of taste and has the exact symptoms, salty taste, can't taste sugar, horrid sour taste in back of mouth. We counted back and she lost her sense of taste three weeks after taking Andrographis, just like I did. Neither of us has ever lost our taste like this. It's not just a dulling of taste, it's an extreme loss of taste. It seems obvious to me that the Andrographis must be what caused it. My sister and I live 2000 miles apart, so it's not like we could have caught the same virus or anything like that.

I just wondered if anyone here had this happen, and even if not, I wanted to post so if this happens to anyone, they might find this post. I did find some links where people were asking Stephen Buhner about loss of taste. He said it was either the Andrographis or the Japanese Knotweed.
buhnerhealinglyme.com/herbs/loss-of-taste/ I've been taking Japanese knotweed for about six months with no strange symptoms. It must be the Andrographis.

I also have a loss of taste and I am waiting to hear back from my naturopath. Did your taste come back after you stopped the andrographis?

Andrographis gives me a metallic taste when I raise the dose too high, it resolves within a few weeks once I stop. I've never heard of that side effect lasting more than a few months.

I was taking andrographis twice a day for about a month when I lost my taste. It was profound. Not just a metallic taste. Food tasted like sawdust. I could hardly eat. I couldn’t taste sweet at all. Even water tasted weird. My sister started andrographis two weeks after me and also lost her taste after one month in the exact same way. When she lost her taste too, we realized it was something we were both taking and the only thing was andrographis. I had already stopped taking it though because I had stopped everything two weeks earlier because of chronic diarrhea. She stopped that day and as predicted, her taste came back two weeks after mine did. So we were pretty sure it was the andrographis. Neither of us has ever had anything like that happen to us, before or since. Btw, it took right around a month after discontinuing it for our taste to come back for both of us.

I guessing this doesn’t happen to many people because I’ve heard of so many people taking andrographis regularly. But I have read of a few people who this happened to. Maybe it’s a genetic thing. Everyone reacts differently to different drugs and herbs. I’ve read of some people who lost their taste from Japanese Knotweed but I’ve been taking that for nearly a year now with no problem.

I take Dr Rawls Vital Plan which is based on Buhners protocol. Andrographis is in the Advanced Biotic supplement and I believe it was either this or Japanese Knotweed Extract which caused me to lose my sense of taste. I had the exact same symptoms as you. It's pretty common among people following this treatment. Mine came on about 6 weeks in and lasted about 6 weeks. I'd say I'm about 70% back to normal now and seem to be improving slowly. The only thing I did was to add 20mg Biotin a day to my regime as that is what was suggested. It was a horrible experience but I'm still convinced the benefits of the protocol outweight the (temporary, hopefully!) loss of taste.

missy_j78, I would love to do the Rawl’s program instead of all these tinctures and powders. But my loss of taste was so awful I couldn’t live with it. I was dropping weight rapidly. Not to mention how depressing it was to miss Thanksgiving dinner. cry

I’m doing the protocol without andrographis and seem to be making progress.

When I saw this loss of taste side effect it reminded me that this is somewhat common to those taking the antifungal Terbinifine (Lamasil). Apparently andrographis is antifungal, antibacterial, and has antiviral properties as well. It has been compared to the chemical composition of Chloramphenicol.

The loss of taste is more often temporary when referring to the side effect of the drug Terbinafine but in a small percentage of those using the drug who experienced this side effect it has been reported as becoming permanent. One study showed if the loss lasted longer than a year that it was unlikely to return.

I dont wish to alarm anyone but simply inform so you can calculate your risks. I have not seen anything to indicate this a permanent loss is possible with andrographis, however I would proceed with caution.
