I know someone who went to see Dr J (i hope this abbreviation is ok) today, and he was told not to use Stevia as a sweetener. Any idea why? I never viewed stevia as a lyme treatment, but I'm curious as to why he would have been told not to use it. he couldn't remember why. lyme brain, i suppose.

Some LLMD's prescribe Stevia for biofilm busting.

Maybe this Dr. didn't want him doing that right now...

Which Dr. J.? The one who has the lyme clinic?
Or the one who is in DC?

or another Dr. J?

I know Dr. J that I am going to see uses xylitol and lactoferrin for biofilm busting...not sure what his stance is on stevia.

Other LLMD’s do use stevia as a biofilm buster.

This may be a stupid question but is everyone talking about the sweetener Stevia I use in my decaf coffee?

Summer, that's the one.

Rawls and Buhner are not inclined to use Stevia for lyme. As for breaking up biofilms, both Rawls and Buhner talk about how most all herbs (plants) break up biofilms.

Quoted from Buhner website:

The herb (Stevia) is also touted as helping break up biofilms. NOTE: Most herbs contain substances that help break up biofilms; plants figured out how to do that millions of years ago. Plants get sick, just like us, they can’t go to the doctor, they can’t call a medic, they have to treat their own diseases by figuring out what is wrong and crafting substances to deal with the infections they have. Part of the reason they are better than drugs is that they contain multiple substances that they have created to deal with bacteria – they had to deal with bacteria long before our species even existed, so they created antibacterials; they had to deal with bacterial resistance long ago so they create anti-resistance chemicals; they had to deal with biofilms so they created biofilm breaking agents, and so on. There is a list of perhaps 40 herbs that break up biofilms in the second edition of Healing Lyme, this is by no means exhaustive. ALL plants break up biofilms to varying extents.

Yup - you may be busting biofilms unknowingly...lol.

Although, some LLMD's don't agree that stevia is a good one to use...

We do have to remember that this was a test carried out in vitro only (in a test tube), and many things that have been 'proven' to work against Borrelia in a test tube does not work the same when actually used in vivo (in the body).

I've seen some claim it helps, and others (like me) that have felt no difference at all.

But, some doctors are suggesting using stevia because it's an all natural sweetener with no ill side effects, or determent to the body.

Some do say it helps, and I surely don't want to take that point away from them - but it definitely does not help everyone. I've been using it for the last 17 years (due to other issues) and have never felt anything from it. It's safe enough to try, just don't assume it's working.
