Because I've gotten such conflicting advice from my doctors (a primary care doctor who's treating me for Lyme, and a rheumatologist who believes I have an autoimmune disorder), someone here suggested I look for a Lyme-literate rheumatologist. The only one that I found anywhere nearby is a Dr. G in Basking Ridge, NJ. Does anyone have any feedback on her?

Because I live in NYC, I don't have a car -- and so it's kind of a trek to get there, requiring multiple trains (or else a pretty $$ Uber ride). But they did have an appointment available pretty soon, so I thought it might be worth it.

Thank you.
Started herbal treatment for Lyme in early 2017. Did 1 month of doxy Aug. 2017; started doxy again Jan. 2018. Uncertain about diagnosis b/c tests have been iffy, and my symptoms (dry eyes/mouth, finger joint pain/swelling) look like classic autoimmune issues. DNA Connexions test showed Lyme, babesia, ehrlichia. Rheumatologist doesn't believe in these test results.

Hi Lily - I do have one comment on Dr. G. in Basking Ridge, NJ. (I didn't know she was a Rheumatologist.)

Someone posted this on the forum:

Report from a patient – that she did not recognize bands 83/93+ and 41+ as positive for lyme. *** (it was a test from a different lab , but it would be an Igenex Positive result)

I looked through my list for NYC and don't have any Rheumatologist's listed. However, I also didn't have Dr. G listed as a Rheumatologist either.

I went to her with positive tests from igenex and symptoms of lyme and co's. She decided to run more tests for lyme and co's (while I was on antibiotics) all tests came back negative or equivocal, so she told me to get off antibiotics. I knew that was not the correct thing to do while still having symptoms, so I told her no. I would not recommend her. She treats based on tests and not symptoms. All of the best LLMDs treat based on symptoms because the testing is inaccurate.

Even the ones who aren’t “the best” treat based on clinical diagnosis.

I will add another comment to her name on my list.
I wouldn’t consider her Lyme Literate based on these comments.

She is very lyme literate. She was the president of ILADS... probably back in 2011 or something. I don't get what her deal is. She has all the knowledge, but is trusting the testing. It's bizarre.

But, isn't part of being lyme literate knowing that lyme is a clinical diagnosis...that's where you start.
If she trusts the testing...then really, she doesn't have all the knowledge...or she does, but isn't using it...which is even more perplexing.

So, that's why I'm saying I wouldn't consider her Lyme Literate in your response to your statement:
"She is very lyme literate"

I don't think I should remove her from my list because at least if someone asks about her, I can share information...but if she's removed...then I won't remember her. I have just put notations beside her information so that I don't give her name out anymore.

Thank you so much for the feedback. When I was googling, I saw an article where this doctor was quoted as saying that Lyme doesn't always show up in the tests. I'm really puzzled as to why she seems to have (apparently) changed her philosophy. I wonder if the criticism/pressure that is directed against LLMDs ended up being too much, and she went back to a more "mainstream" type of practice? Or if she changed her mind about testing?

It's such a shame. I had hoped that finding a Lyme-literate rheumatologist would be the answer for me -- to figuring out which, if any, of my symptoms are autoimmune vs. Lyme, and thus being able to settle on a course of treatment.

If I have something like rheumatoid arthritis, then I know that immediate aggressive meds are in order to prevent the finger pain/swelling from turning into permanent joint damage. But if it's Lyme, I obviously don't want to start drugs that suppress my immune system.

My daughter, who has seen some re-runs of House MD, said it's a shame there's not a doctor like House in real life -- someone who considers every possibility and then, somehow, always comes to the right answer.
Started herbal treatment for Lyme in early 2017. Did 1 month of doxy Aug. 2017; started doxy again Jan. 2018. Uncertain about diagnosis b/c tests have been iffy, and my symptoms (dry eyes/mouth, finger joint pain/swelling) look like classic autoimmune issues. DNA Connexions test showed Lyme, babesia, ehrlichia. Rheumatologist doesn't believe in these test results.

I wanted to give a quick update on my appointment with Dr. G, in case anyone else is considering seeing her. I saw her early last week, and she left a voicemail with my test results yesterday. The appointment was pleasant. I liked her, and she seemed enthusiastic about explaining the different ways that Lyme tests work. Her fee was also much lower than many other Lyme specialists.

Because my symptoms seem very much like autoimmune symptoms, she also did the same kind of exam my own rheumatologist has done -- examining my finger joints (where I have pain/swelling), as well as my wrists and knees. She also took blood to run some Lyme and autoimmune tests.

She left me a voicemail indicating that my Lyme test was positive. She said that I had 3 IgM bands -- 41, 31, 23. She said she had tested for all coinfections and that I had only a very low IgG for Bartonella (which she thought wasn't significant).

In terms of autoimmune markers, my ANA was positive (as always), slightly higher than usual. All other autoimmune markers that she tested were negative.

She said that the regimen I'm currently on (doxycycline and Plaquenil) is perfect, and that she would have me continue taking that. I have not yet had a chance to call back with questions. (One question I'd like to ask is whether the positive ANA can be caused by Lyme. Another is to ask her about the significance of the bands being IgM vs IgG.)

I spoke at length to a nice woman who had arrived very early for her appointment. She said that Dr. G was wonderful, had diagnosed her (with Lyme) years ago when multiple doctors had no idea what was wrong with her, and had successfully treated her. She said that she had returned to see Dr. G (having flown in from out-of-state) because she thought she might have been reinfected recently.

Lily - Overall, it sounds like it was a positive appointment with Dr. G.

However, I have to say - this statement is concerning :
"She said she had tested for all coinfections and that I had only a very low IgG for Bartonella (which she thought wasn't significant). "

I hope she isn't relying on testing for the coinfections...whether to treat you or not.

And..since you did have IgG for Bart (albeit 'low') - I hope she't not going to rule it out...and will treat you for it.
