I called the pharmacy that I will be getting my meds from after seeing Dr. J.
In particular I wanted to find out what their price was for generic Mepron.
They said they didn't have generic. And their price was $600 per bottle.

I thought it was more than that - like over $1,000.

So isn't Atovaquone generic...and Mepron is the name-brand?

atovacquone is liquid generic and $600 is retail but insurance will cover 2/3 of the cost.

i paid anywhere between $974 and $1160 per 210ml bottle last year.

everyone's insurance is different for example my company used to max out the co-pay on this to $50 but they conveniently removed this 'restriction' (probably cause i was ordering a lot of it and hey they need to make money right?) so now i pay the full amount until i hit my $5k deductible.

today's healthcare should be more appropriately titled frankencare

Obama Care is great... isn't it! We give away health care insurance to people that can't afford it, because they use the emergency rooms instead of seeing a regular PCP. But now they can't afford to pay their high deductibles, so they go back to the emergency room when they have the flu and never pay the bill.

I'm paying over 25% of my months net salary for health insurance premiums, then have to come up with another $5000 US before I can use it.

So is there a generic that is cheaper?

I have Blue Cross - but I’m in Canada so it’s different here as far as insurance coverage. We don’t have “co-pay”

I don’t think there is a deductible - not that I can remember.

So she must be wrong about it not being generic if the price is $600.
The name brand would be more than that?

Atovaquone costs the pharmacy about $450 to get it. What they mark it up to depends on the pharmacy. Without insurance, you could call a few independently owned pharmacies and get a quote. All of them would have to order it but you could possibly get a better price negotiating it as a cash sell.

GH - that is the generic, then right?

The lady I spoke to must be wrong...as $600 couldn't be the name-brand?

Im hoping my insurance will cover it at 80% like it has on most of my meds...except one. I can't remember which one that was.

Must be . So you’ve chosen the Mepron over the generic Rikky? Is this your choice or does your LLMD suggest this?

We often use the term Mepron in place of Atovaquone because of the ease in saying it. Basically no one uses the brand anymore because of price. A $600 price for the generic is about a 50% mark up which isn't that unheard of because of the brand price. Because it is a special order, some pharmacies may let it go for less. A $75 or $100 profit is better than no profit.

GH - Is the Mepron better quality? Would you take the generic?

I don't even know really - if all the other abx I got were generic or name-brand...most likely generic.

No, I'd use generic. I actually called the manufacturer of Mepron about using it in a target study but was told that they were going to discontinue the manufacturing of the brand due to high manufacturing cost and decreased usage since the generic was available. This was several years ago and I still believe they make the brand.

I find it fascinating that Mepron is yellow. That cost me a lot of time researching.

there's only one doctor i've heard say that the named brand "Mepron" is better and that's Dr. R in NYC. he's old school so not sure if that plays into it. he's also one of the few LLMD's i've heard who will prescribe mepron and atovaquone concurrently.

Both at once? that's odd.

Why do you have to take this drug if its so expensive? I looked up the benfits of Mepron and it said its used for lung issues. If you dont have lung issues what else is it used for?

Lung issues? Never heard of that.

Mepron is an anti malarial / anti parasitical med.

The most effective for Babesia.

Resurrecting this thread.

My Mepron/Atovaquone arrived...It doesn't appear to be generic. It says Mepron on the Box and on the bottle.

It would just say Atovaquone if it was the generic, right?
