Anyone else have redness, burning, or inflammation in the face? I've only seen a few references to this phenomenon.

Anyway, this was a symptom that started for me a few years before my life-altering chronic Lyme symptoms started. I suffered with it to varying degrees on pretty much a daily basis for about 10 years. It suddenly went away around Oct 2015, around the time that my intestines decided to stop functioning, started skipping menstrual cycles, and started having silent reflux. I started Nexium and Zantac for the reflux then and stayed on it about 6 months. The reflux meds STOPPED the redness, burning and inflammation in my face and also GREATLY REDUCED nasal mucus and stuffy nose. I asked an allergist about it, and he had no explanation.

As I've been treating Bartonella, Lyme, and Babesia herbally with Buhner's protocols, I've recently had a return of the red, puffy cheeks, mucus, stuffy nose, worsened intestinal inflammation and constipation, along with some other symptoms.

Could any of this be related to Lyme, bartonella, or babesia?

That is indeed odd that the reflux meds helped you with inflammation. A rare thing with these reflux meds is that they can develop lupus or aggravate the existing one. So them helping you is odd, but i think that since you started abx again and it came back, then it is one of the aforementioned infections and you'll have to wait OR get those reflux meds back.

Sounds a bit like rosacea? Google images. I was diagnosed with rosacea a few years before neuro symptoms started. I had red bumps on cheeks. I had been nervous that it was lupus but derm said rosacea. It did clear with mino. Recently I have been getting more red flushing but no bumps thank god.

Mine's not rosacea or lupus. No bumps. No butterfly rash. Affects the cheeks mainly in a vertical pattern concentrated in the jawls. All the autoimmune tests I had at Mayo in 2011 were negative. Used to start at work around noon and increasingly worsen throughout the day. Sometimes I felt like I had a low grade fever with it. It would start to dissipate in the evenings and calm down by 8-9 pm. When it was the worst, it was around the clock but would lessen in the evening through the morning. Also have stinging sensations and feeling of tightness in the skin and tissue below the surface.

It sounds like a nerve issue to me.

I'm thinking possibly bartonella. Sounds awful, WBF - sorry you have this.

I too had the hot red face for many years prior to my diagnosis of Lyme & Bartonella, as well as GERD. Both symptoms came rather suddenly along with the multitude of other odd symptoms. Strangely, I developed asthma soon after these two symptoms. Within just a few months I was diagnosed with rosacea, GERD and asthma.

My PCP doctor put me on Prilosec and it did help BUT after a few months I found that using the drug triggered migraines (also one of my tbd symptoms) and I had to stop taking it. Around this same time I developed an allergy to oranges & orange juice--both would also trigger a migraine.

Looking back, especially considering the numerous other symptoms that came along with those mentioned, I believe that the Lyme and co-infections are responsible for all these symptoms that just came out of nowhere to someone previously healthy. For me, the red hot face, GERD and asthma symptoms were relieved after being on antibiotics for a few months.

I believe Azithromycin was the antibiotic that did the most for me as far as the Rosacea, acid reflux & asthma symptoms because if I went off of it these problems would re-occur. I can't say if it was due to the Azithromycin reducing the lingering bacteria or just the properties of the antibiotic?

Don't know if it will help you, as we all are dealing with different bacteria, meds, etc., but what helped me with the acid reflux prior to my diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics, was eating certain foods that were alkaline and helped to lower the acidity of my body.

Raw carrot sticks, watermelon, cantaloupe seemed to soak that acid right up and I most often felt better within half hour or less. I never took the acid inhibitors again, just made sure I always had a "rescue" food in my fridge at all times. A teaspoon or 2 of Honey has also helped me at times.

Sugar and breads seemed to make my reflux much worse and if the problem was truly caused by Lyme & company then possibly the sugar & carbs were giving the bacteria the acidic environment they thrive in?

I hope you find the right remedy for these issues as I know how uncomfortable they are.

in-this-together,

Thank you for your response.
