The Zika fear mongering might actually be one of the dumbest things of current times. At the time it was making headlines there were like 34 cases in the US. Everyone was talking about the potential for congenital birth defects and sexual transmission. At the same time there were like tens of thousands of cases annually of babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, etc and 300,000 estimated cases of Lyme disease and sexual and congenital transmission has been a huge controversy. Goes to show how culture driven science is. We're quick to throw blame at immigrants yet extremely skeptical of the issues that arise in our homeland. Must be a huge sense of security in believing that zoonotic diseases are only problematic in poor tropical countries.
