Has anyone taken any herbs to either avoid or shorten the flu this season? Going back and forth with my wife on whether our kids should get the flu shot when she read that while the flu shot isn't for the strain going around (H3N1) it can lessen the impact.

Considering more people are dying from this seasons flu strain my wife is worried, but color me skeptical about pumping my kid with chemicals that aren't even for the virus you're trying to avoid. I think the pharma companies have a bunch of excess inventory they're trying to unload.

Was thinking if they do get sick bust out a few strong anti-viral herbs but curious what people think about which ones. Thanks.

Well .y wife has had bronchitis almost a week. My whole family got it. I loaded up on Chinese skullcap, oregano oil, and my usual cats claw and knotweed. For a moment or two I felt a little something in my lungs, took my herbs and it went away. Hard to say if I'm just lucky or if its the herbs. But skullcap is a Chinese staple for viral infection. Knotweed has some activity as well. And probably the others. Buhners has an antiviral book that might be worthwhile for more details

I take garlic, oregano oil, astragulus, zinc, and ginger when I feel like I'm getting sick. I'm already taking teasel and boneset, which are really good for colds and congestion. Boneset and teasel tea are really good if you feel a cold coming on. I'm also taking andrographis, which has really boosted my immune system (it can give some people a really bad allergic reaction though).

My whole family, I think got the flu over the summer, I had a few sniffles, but I didn't get really sick (and I've really gotten the flu bad other years). I would definitely suggest going to the doctor if you get really sick, but I think taking herbs is a good way to avoid that.

I definitely would say herbs are safe or safer than most cough medicines (I think the ones I used to take as a kid were mostly alcohol anyway). One of my family members had a really bad reaction to Robitussin, and ended up in the hospital. But herbs can give people allergic reactions too, so I guess I'm biased.

And yet, Tamiflu is also causing significant issues this year - according to what I've been seeing. The key is to read up on it and learn the issues and watch for them. This is a really bad flu, as has been pointed out.

For those that can take antivirals, it's best to have those either on hand or be taking them now. For many, things like oil of oregano (one of my favorite herbs) will also treat the bacterial infections they have as well, and could easily make them herx on top of having the flu.

Many of the other things that are often suggested also will increase the immune system - also setting us up for herxing from our infections.

So the key is to be hypervigilant, take only what you need to in order to avoid getting the flu, and all the other things that we have all been taught to avoid spreading these germs - hand washing, covering our mouths and noses when sneezing and coughing (then washing - or cough and sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away) and so on.

I have chosen to stay on several antivirals at lower doses - both for my viral infections as well as staving off the flu.

So, just be careful in what you choose to do.

thanks guys. there is no chance i'm having my kids (or me) take tamiflu. some kid just died from that due to psychotic episode side effects + it doesn't do much in my experiences.

Hi Rikky. This is a concern for us too as I have 3 kiddos in school. I do not do vaccines after my son had a bad reaction from meningitis vaccine that took 3-4 months for symptoms to go away.

Anyway, I am giving them elderberry syrup and extra vid d/k2. Two of the 3 have sore throats right now so I'm diffusing essential oils & giving umcka. Those are the extra things I'm doing for flu season. My normal stuff that I think still helps is a green smoothie every morning (spinach, strawberry, banana, scoop of amazing grass greens, flax seed, almond milk & sometimes a scoop of MCP as binder). I'm making them wash their hands a lot too.

You can mix the elderberry syrup with sparkling mineral water and some organic cranberry/pomegranate juice. Our Whole Foods had it for sample and my kids liked it so I've been making it when they want a special pop-like drink.

I'm trying very hard to limit their sugar since I just learned that sugar suppresses neutrophils for about 5 hrs after consumption.

I did purchase homeopathic flu remedy to have on hand just in case.

We also don't do the flu shot and I'm very nervous about this year's flu. We take muco coccinum once per week (the whole family) for the duration of the flu season. We have elderberry syrup, which can be taken prophylactically, but it's so expensive and we are a family of 5, so we have been using at the onset of any cold / flu symptoms. The wet sock treatment, which we haven't tried yet, is supposed to be amazing for illness. We also have Biocidin on hand, which my daughter is currently taking for an eye infection, but I've read it's also really good for the flu. And if they get sick, they get extra vitamin D, A & C. I also diffuse / apply essential oils. And for myself, I also take an essential oil immune booster supplement. I'm hoping it's enough.

Oh - and lots and lots of hand washing and educating about how germs are passed.

k07 - that's really interesting about the meningitis vaccine, and I'm sorry your son had such a reaction. My daughter just turned 11 and the pediatrician was pushing that and the tetanus booster (she knows and accepts we are not doing vaccines right now though). I declined, but wanted to research those two, because those illnesses are not something to mess around with. But I had a bad a reaction to a vaccine, which caused my Lyme to come out (I was asymptomatic before), so I really don't want to give my kids any more vaccines either (they all were on schedule before we knew they had Lyme). I'm glad your son is doing better. What's the homeopathic flu remedy you have?

Sounds like we are doing many of the same things!

I think the homeopathic that I have is what you may be using:

My son never had a vaccine reaction until that vaccine. He was fully vaccinated up until then. The worst was episodes of not being able to breathe and also feeling like he would choke on food. He started twitching like crazy when he would try to sleep, felt spacey, cough, yellow skin w/ dark eye circles, and groin lymph nodes swelled up. This all started the day after vaccine. I thank god the problems were not lasting - but it opened my eyes to what some parents are going through. I personally think he had something working on him when he got the vaccine which had lowered his immune system. He tested high igg for chlamydia pneum.

Hi Rikky,

I had the flu for the first time in my entire life, lasted about 10 days. I found this after I got better which I will keep in my house just in case:

"One of the finest, all-around home remedies is this immune supporting tonic. A special warning comes with this powerful, immune supporting elixir – it’s made to work, not to taste. So, it’s not for the feint of heart, but it will provide a synergistic shot of nutrients that will fortify your body and help your body eliminate a toxic burden that is making your life difficult."

Here are the ingredients and directions, courtesy of Healing the Body:
•2 cloves of garlic
•1/2 small onion
•1 piece of turmeric (1 inch or 1/4 tsp ground)
•1 piece of ginger (1/2 inch or 1/4 tsp ground)
•1 lemon
•1/2 small jalapeño or dash of cayenne pepper
•1 oz of apple cider vinegar (ACV)
•1 dash of black pepper
•Optional: 1 piece of horseradish (1/2 inch)
•Optional: 1 tsp raw honey

Simply put the fresh produce through a good masticating (preferable) juicer and add in the liquid and dry ingredients at the end (ACV, pepper, honey). If you don’t have a juicer, you can also use a blender for a more chunky version (or filter it out), if desired. This formula will keep well in a cool dark place for months.
12 years well ~ used Dr. Jernigan's protocol from his book about Biological Medicine (used Borrelogen, Microbojen and Neuro-Antitox).

I still detox even though healed and drink Green Vibrance. I come back to help others for others helped me when I was sick. Pay it forward! smile

Thanks k07! I had forgotten that my LLND mentioned the occillococcinum for if we get sick. The muco coccinum is supposed to be preventative.

I'm so sorry about all of those symptoms in your son, it must have been so hard to watch! It's awful to see them go through things that we really have little to no ability to help.

That sounds like what I know as "Fire Cider"! I've been a bit nervous to make and try it, as they say, it's made to work! LOL!

I do more reading than posting but I'll give you my flu story.

My 2 kids and husband who do not have lyme received the flu vaccine back in the fall. I did not get the flu vaccine for the past two years although I used to pre lyme.

The week of 1/22 - my son's best friend was diagnosed with the flu. Conveniently I had a an appt. with my LLND on 1/24 & I told her I was freaking out a bit about this flu season. At that appt. she told me to take 1 tsp elderberry syrup twice per day & 2 Vital Nutrients Herbal Biotics twice per day for the next month at least. I also already take NAC & Vitamin D which was recommended. She told me to give the kids 1 tsp elderberry syrup twice per day & vitamin C powder. We started that day.

On Sunday 1/28, my daughter had a fever of 102 & my son was not feeling well but had no fever. They both had that glassy eyed sick look. On Monday, I brought them both to sick hour at their pediatrician's office & made a U-turn because it was overrun with sick, coughing people. I got them an appt later in the day. Since my daughter had the fever, she swabbed her for the flu & it came back positive for Influenza B. She also had a double ear infection. She did not swab my son because she said "No fever, no flu" but I'm skeptical - his best friend and his sister had it but he didn't? I should have pushed for the swab for him but hindsight is 20-20. My daughter got antibiotics for the ear infection but she said it was too late for Tamiflu and she doesn't recommend it for otherwise healthy kids. Her fever came down on Monday but I kept her out of school until Thursday because there is an immune compromised child in her class. Fortunately she was never super sick. She slept more than normal but rebounded nicely. My son felt better on Tuesday and went back to school. Both are 100% now. Did the flu shot lessen their symptoms? Did the elderberry & vitamin C lessen their symptoms? Hard to tell but that's their story.

As for me - I switched my antibiotic protocol due to high liver enzymes on 1/24 at that appt & have felt awful ever since. I usually have a low grade fever around 99. The past 6 days or so my fever has gone up as a high as 100. My whole body aches & it's really hard for me to tell if I'm fighting off a flu virus or if it's from the protocol change. No cough fortunately. One thing that makes me think it might the flu is advil provides some relief which it never did for my lyme aches & pains. I'm going to keep up with the elderberry syrup & Herbal Biotics as planned.

When my daughter got back to class on Thursday, 40% of the kids were absent!! I'm looking forward to February vacation so we can get all these kids away from each other!

Oh & my husband - of course - he's fine. He never gets sick.

Mrseaglea,

I'm with you on freaking-out about this flu season. I'm not sure if the media is helping or hurting.

I keep a bottle of EO Peppermint Hand Sanitizer Spray in my car and disinfect my hands every time I get in the car after leaving the grocery store, restaurants, gas station, etc. For the first time in my life, I even used the sanitizing wipes at Whole Foods Market to wipe-down the handle on the basket I carry.

As soon as I get home (I live alone), I wash my hands thoroughly. I even bought Clorox Wipes, so I could wipe-down common surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as doorknobs, light switches, refrigerator handle, microwave keypad, etc., before my girlfriend comes over.

I'm glad your kids are doing better. You were very thoughtful to consider the immunocompromised child in your daughter's class. Bravo!

Your husband is lucky to have such robust health. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Sincerely,
The Dude

My son came home a few days ago and brought back the nasty flu going around the east coast. This is day one of the onset of illness. I am considering using chlorine dioxide to shorten its duration. If I do I will post results here.

Just wanted to follow up that I decided against using Chlorine Dioxide on the first day of illness after onset from the night before.

The first reason is I have yet to use it on myself and experience is often the best teacher.

Second, I wanted to see how his immune system responded to the flu with a little help from stuff we do know, so I gave him Oiive Leaf, Lipolized Vitamin C, and Lysine.

I followed it hours later with the Carnicom protocol (Glutathione, Lactoferrin, more C, and Carnosine) which we are now all on for the foreseeable future.

I am happy to report he is showing significant improvement on day two. Nothing dramatic but fever broke, and making headway.

So whatever you do to attempt to shorten a flu, do it as soon as is possible.
