Hi all,

So I'm starting my Dapsone journey tonight.
I'm a little confused about what dosage Folic/Folate acid I should be taking.

In Horowitz book it says:

. said...
with extra folic acid to help prevent side effects of Dapsone. I use Leucovorin, a pharmaceutical folic acid, and a nutraceutical high-strength activated folic acid from Xymogen called 5-MTHF-ES (5-methyltetrahydrofolate extra-strength) or Folify-ER. A total of at least 30 mg of folic acid a day must be used (sometimes higher, i.e., 45 to 60 mg/day) to minimize the anemia associated with Dapsone. Average decreases in hemoglobin of about 2 to 3 grams can be expected with Dapsone using the above doses of folic acid, which stabilizes over time. Deplin (L-methyl folate) can also be included in the protocol.

That seems like an awful lot of Folic Acid, no?

My pharmacist said it's not needed and online it says only for Mothers who are having a baby.

Most Folic Acid supplements come in microgram (MCG) so this seems very extreme to me.

Hope somebody can help!

Thank you!

I have read that we shouldn't take folic acid - but Folate instead.

I don't know how much is recommended - but my Swanson Bcomplex (methylated B's) has 400 mcg per capsule. Directions are to take one or two per day.

But this isn't specifically for anyone taking Dapsone.

What does your LL Dr suggest ?

Hopefully someone on the protocol wifi post.

I am starting dapsone as well with the hopes of doing double dapsone regimen if I tolerate it well.

Horowitz recommends 4 mthf es pills, 2x a day. Yes it’s a lot, but this is what he has found to prevent the side effects associated with dapsone. Also recommends 1g of glutathione 2x per day, which is excessive but he says is necessary.

Yikes - I was just reading about folic acid

"Less serious side effects include digestive problems, nausea, loss of appetite, bloating, gas, a bitter or unpleasant taste in the mouth, sleep disturbances, depression, excessive excitement, irritability and a zinc deficiency. More severe signs include psychotic behavior, numbness or tingling, mouth pain, weakness, trouble concentrating, confusion, fatigue and even seizures. "

How much per pill?

Edit - the Xymogen is 5000 mcg per cap

Yes your right - I edited my post . That is for the extra strength - there's also one that's 1000 mcg per pill/cap
