The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) -- best known for causing mononucleosis -- also increases the risks for some people of developing seven other major diseases, according to a new study. The diseases are: systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and type 1 diabetes. Combined, these diseases affect nearly 8 million people in the US.

well it is among the most successful virus ever with over 80% population having it inside their bodies dormant.

so they are missing someth big. genetics, other infections. im pretty sure 80% of the planet does not have MS....

I think it has to do with viral load. Ebv+hhv6+hsv 1, etc. about 60% of people have hsv 1 by 50. These are all things our immune system is doing constant battle with. Ebv/hsv/hhv are herpes viruses which lay dormant in nerves so I can see how they are involved in nervous system diseases. We need a way to kill these hard to reach viruses that immune system can’t get to. CRISPR has potential but scary if it snips the wrong dna.

I recently finished a book talking about our failing medical system (written by a doctor). And I really started to appreciate how much viruses are a bigger factor in many ailments than I had previously understood!!! Really good book!
I don't think viruses get enough attention personally!

My Kid#2 definitely has a viral issue going on. He's reacted favorably to anti-viral supplements when we've been stuck.
Kid#1: Extremely sick for several years, very difficult to treat, but doing great now!
Kid#2: Still sick now despite being treated for years but doing better (not well yet).
Kid#3: Generally good but relapsing off/on.
Me: Adv Labs positive 2016 (suspected I passed to my kids)-not as sick as others, mostly battling fatigue and yeast issues (heart/kidney issues resolved)
Treating with herbals now.

1000Daisies - do you mind sharing the name of the book you read?

Hey, 1000Daisies,

Which antiviral supplements/herbs have helped? At what doses?

I feel like viruses are a big issue for me, especially the herpes viruses, probably more.

Sure!
The book is called "Incurable Me : Why the Best Medical Research Does Not Make It Into Clinical Practice" by Kenneth Stoller.
/www.incurable-me.com/kp-stoller-md

I haven't really been on the website yet personally, but here is the general website too:
/www.incurable-me.com/

It does have a section on lyme, but it's not a lyme-only book (so much more). It covers variety of diseases, pesticides, food supply, mercury, vaccines, viruses, hbot, and so much more.

It took me months to finish because, to be honest, it's depressing how dysfunctional our current systems are in our country.

I do recommend the book!

Hi WBF! I am so sorry I missed seeing your question (sorry about that!). But I'm here now! smile

Here is a prior thread about Kid#2 and his viral supplements (and a bit of the background):
/www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=30&m=3655651

Honestly, I know many of the Buhner herbals are anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-everything (LOL)... but we really saw no improvement in regards to a suspected viral load at the time. We were a bit stuck, and although we still see our functional medicine MD, we sought out a NP for second pair of eyes to look at my kid. He consulted with a couple of his colleagues across the country, and they suspected viral loads for my son. I believe they were right.

The anti-viral supplements that he took (per NP recommendation): [adjusted to his size at the time]
* ViraCon - 1-2 capsules 2x/day <-- we discontinued this
* Monolaurin - 1 capsule 2x/day
* Lysine - 1000 mg 1x/day *
(*Using Lysine Extra which is 800mg for 2 capsules -- was planning on doing 1 pill 2/day.)

At some point, we went off/on these. He DEFINITELY had a reaction when we started these at half dose and again when we went to full dose. And again later, when he was on them, he reacted to them when we restarted. However, he did not react to them last time I put him on them (and I even increased his monolaurin dosage too). His reaction was pretty immediate worsening of symptoms for some days - and then a very noticeable improvement after that. A pretty clear herx reaction (worse then better). I've been thinking of doing a trial again for him.

Kid#1 did not react to the antivirals like Kid#2, so it appears to have not been part of his puzzle.

Especially after reading that book, I've come to appreciate more the complexity of viruses and how they are often times an overlooked and major factor in some of our chronic illnesses. Also, it makes me wonder about people who have been on abx or herbals for long period of time but not fully improving -- are viruses a factor for them?

All trial and error for us - for sure!

Hope that helps. Let me know if any questions??

Do virals cause a herx?

I know my kid herxed from the viral supplements he took. And I can honestly say that we rarely see a definite herx reaction (worsening then better), but for him and those antiviral supplements, it was definitely a herx reaction.

Most of our reactions appear to be more flares than herx, honestly.
