Hi! I was diagnosed with Lyme Spring of 2016. I suspect I got infected Fall of 2015. I was given a 2 week treatment of antibiotics and felt much better after but never 100%. slight muscle pains and fatigue always remained and I hoped it would get better with time. 2 years later am having same symptoms; joint pain, muscle pain, recurring migraines, fatigue, sensitivity to light. Was tested for reinfection and came back negative. Neurologist had me on a week long steroid taper. I felt great until I stopped taking them. Can these symptoms be from the initial infection 2 years ago? Any good LLMD doctors in north NJ? THANK YOU for your time!

Hi AliceNJ. Welcome to the forum;)

Your symptoms can definitely be from the same infection. A two week course of antibiotics isn’t sufficient even for a new infection. Steroids given to Lyme patients is contraindicated since it suppresses the immune system and allows the Borrelia bacteria to thrive even though it may provide temporary relief. Most doctors outside of the Lyme world don’t know that. Also, there is no way to “test” for reinfection. Testing is woefully inadequate for these infections and diagnosis is made clinically.

I’m in NJ and saw several doctors but eventually had to go out of state for adequate treatment. That isn’t to say you won’t find one, though. Others will be along who may be able to direct you to a LLMD in your area. My advice to you would be just to be sure you do pursue treatment so that it doesn’t progress further or you may wind up much worse. Just want you to be aware of that unfortunate reality.

Hi Alice, welcome!

Unfortunately 2 weeks of abx after several months untreated isn't enough.

And steroids are not a good idea - they will suppress the immune system...and this can allow the lyme bacteria to flourish.

So, yes sounds like your initial infection.
