Has anyone experienced abdominal discomfort (pain throughout, feeling like you need to have a constant bowel movement, etc.) while treating with the Cowden Protocol?

I have been experiencing these symptoms since I started on it about 11 days ago, and they have been getting worse.

If it is one or more of the botanicals, I'm wondering which one(s) it might possibly be that's causing the issue.

Also, if you did experience any abdominal issues, what did you do to help eliminate it?

Thanks.

Hi, Justin.

I'm not familiar with the Cowden herbs other than cat's claw and burbur and pinella. I haven't heard anyone mention those side effects from those herbs.

Lyme and bartonella do tend to cause GI problems of various kinds. It could be a GI herx.

If you feel constipated, try Natural Calm magnesium citrate or Vit C powder or crystals. Both of those can be take to bowel tolerance (to the point where stool is loose).

Hello WalkingbyFaith,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have any constipation. I am quite regular. It's just that I have this uncomfortable feeling throughout my abdomen. There's some mild pain and discomfort. I have a feeling it's one of the botanicals from the Cowden Protocol, possibly the Banderol, Samento, or one or more of the other ones. I will stop it for a couple of days and see if it lets up. If so, I will try adding back one botanical at a time and wait for about 3 days before adding another one to see if the issue returns or not. I was just curious if anyone else had this same experience.

Thanks again.

Is it possible that you're having troubles with your gut flora? Is it a bloating feeling? I'm not sure if there's anything in Cowden that's strong enough to mess with that or not but you might consider paying attention to probiotics, kefir and that sort of thing.

Hi sandyfeet,

I don't have any bloating, and I do take probiotics. The issue is just an uncomfortable feeling throughout my abdomen, like when you need to have a bowel movement, but with some pain and other discomfort.

Thank you for your response.

On Cowden for little over 60 days now. I handled the ramp up ok..however I did 2 months of doxy and tindazole prior.

However I was having bowel issues while on the abx and my LLMD gave me a powder to combat my yeast bloom.

If you can isolate the herb and then cut back on that specific one.

I’m pretty happy with the protocol but I am spiking it it’s bart abx this month.

you might consider stopping the protocol and then reintroducing each herbal one at a time to gauge which one might be causing the symptoms. It could also be part of a herx reaction. But could be a good idea to try some of those supplement suggestions mentioned by other members to see if they could help with that issue and allow you to keep up with as much of the protocol as you can manage.
