Hello,

Kind of a weird question.. took activated charcoal for the first time wednesday night.. I heard that the “black stool” would kick in and not to worry. My question is mine didn't show up until this morning, several movements later. Is that normal? It was weird, yesterday I kinda felt slightly sore for a little bit in my lower back kind of where my kidneys are.. is that normal?

Thanks

Donkey

I don't know if it's normal, but sluggish digestion is totally common with chronic illness. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a full day for bowel movements - sometimes more. I will say this, I have never had black stool from charcoal and I was taking it pretty regularly.

Also, charcoal shouldn't cause you pain unless you're constipated which can give you some lower back pain. Make sure to drink LOTS of water.

Mine isn't black, but it's a dark grayish color when i'm taking the charcoal.

So, yours' took 36 hours to come out?
That's not abnormal.

"In the 1980s, Mayo Clinic researchers measured digestion time in 21 healthy people. Total transit time, from eating to elimination in stool, averaged 53 hours (although that figure is a little overstated, because the markers used by the researchers passed more slowly through the stomach than actual food). The average transit time through just the large intestine (colon) was 40 hours, with significant difference between men and women: 33 hours for men, 47 hours for women."

When I take charcoal at night I always have normal bowel movements the next day. The blacker stools occur on the second day for me too and it has always been that way. I don't have lower back pain but I usually develop abdominal bloating until I pass the charcoal.

Very interesting. I guess i never knew my digestion was sluggish. I will say that I feel a tad bit better after that last one.. I’ll keep playing with the AC and see what happens. Is the idea that if you don’t get rid of the toxins from die off you are effectively adding fuel to the Lyme?

Hi Girlie,

Yes about 36 hours. Does that mean the abx meds I took 3 hours after the AC were affected? Is it however long it takes to pass the AC or just making sure not to take any meds 3 hours +/- AC??

It doesn't look sluggish to me..."The average transit time through just the large intestine (colon) was 40 hours, with significant difference between men and women: 33 hours for men, 47 hours for women."

The accumulation of toxins can cause inflammation, and symptoms.

Thanks Girlie! Im off the low dose Xanax, just trying to deal with the anxiety herx by detoxing which I’ve neglected. I’ll try the AC for a while and then add in milk thistle.

It did for me too - when I drank a full glass of water - so then I upped my water to two glasses and it was better

Well - My pulsatile tinnitus is gone - it was somewhat better prior to going to the J clinic, but the past two months it’s improved - pretty much gone now.

Another symptom - POTS - I had mild pots - diagnosed by my LLND in 2014 due to my heart rate going up to 105 bpm, sometimes higher when I stand up.
For the past week most days I’ve tested it, my heart rate is only going up to low 90’s.

I really really REALLY wish that my nerve pain in the thoracic area of my back and left a arm would get better.

Oh - my memory/cognitive function has improved a bit.
When I wake up most mornings I know what day of the week it is and if I have an appt that day or not.

I’m on a strong Babesia protocol that includes Bactrim - but I’m concerned it’s not enough to keep bart from growing.

How are you doing?
