Hi,

I’m currently taking malarone for babesia. When I got to two tabs twice a day, I got bsd stomach cramps and nausea. Do these side affects lessen with time?

Am trying to source mepron — we don’t have it where I live. Malarone contains two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil, Mepron is atovaquone on its own. I understand mepron dosage is 1.5 grams/day, which is twice the amount of atovaquone that I’ve been able to tolerate. I

Anyone know if it’s the atovaquone/ mepron that’s the culprit.? And do side affects lessen with time?

Hi coconut,

Were you taking any anti-parasitic medications prior to malarone? Definitely check in with your doctor just to make sure. If it is a herx reaction-it should subside with time as you mentioned. Be sure to be detoxing as much as you can when you have those symptoms.

Hopefully others can chime in here on the mepron meds as I have not taken either of these. I did have reactions to a lot of medicine that YES did lessen over time. But sometimes I was just on too much to tolerate and had to go off medication or go slower with treatment because my body just couldn't handle all of it.

Just hang in there, talk to the doctor and LISTEN to your body!

Thank you, Beth.
I’ve been on malarone for about five months now— that’s the only ant-parasitic. My last babesia test was negative but my llmdd wants two negative test in a row to be sure. He increased the dose at my last appointment,

That's great to hear your test came back negative! How much longer are you on the regimen for?

The atovaquone needs to be taken with a fatty meal. Are you doing that?

I have a bit of tummy ache sometimes after taking the Mepron. I'm on double dosage - so 1.5 twice daily.
Unfortunately, the tummy discomfort did not subside over time....but it was better if I ate a full meal when taking it.

Thanks so much!
I’m being treated for babesia for another 3-4 months.
Girlie, thanks for the reminder about fat—will pay more attention to that. And double dose — wow!
Opugirl, I’m thankful for the negative test but sure wish my tremors had gotten better! Thinking I’m looking at IV therapy next — even though my Lyme test is also currently negative.

I had done single dose for about 7 - 8 months (1 tsp twice/day) - then took a break for about 3 months (did some bart treatment) and now back on it but twice the amount.
Going on 4 months now.

The double dose is hard to take...and I'm so DONE with it - but my LLMD won't change protocol until I see him in person - mid August. Has to feel my liver and spleen for swelling and hopefully then I will go back to bart (which I previously treated)

I’m craving something with coconut and lime now... how did that happen? I don’t know much about your tremors... I did get iv glutathione and vitamins and that helped a little bit. Not as much as I thought but a little bit. I actually had blood work show that I was deficient in a lot of vitamins and minerals that were causing symptoms of themselves more so then the bacteria or infection.

Whew tough disease. I know what you mean about the test results... I never got more then one test after I was positive. I wanted to but then sometimes, I did not. I had some weird twitches and such for months after I suspended treatment. I was insistent that I needed something but eventually with immune and good nutrition support they did go away.
